Subject: How do you feel about bans and warnings, and when compared?

The beta is super awesome. RogueAssassin27 is now the person who got my Totodile's nickname. Hoo-hah! Relevant.inb4lock

T4R. Also with simply locking threads in this list.

I, personally, think a warning is easier to shrug off and is simply what it is. A ban, however, makes me feel I have done something wrong and rightfully should be punished.

Chapter

Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

I've honestly probably got more hatemail for warnings than bans.

I never appeal to a ban, and I never bother with warnings. If I get one, I just assume I deserved it and continue on.

Oh look... It's Underdog...

How about the mods usage of the three?

Do you warn or ban more?

I honestly don't know how I'd react yet. Frustrated, probably?

"Usage of three"?
I'm sorry, but I don't understand.

I play for fun and armory completion. :)

I appealed my 1 real ban even when I knew I deserved it, I didn't really have anything better to do.

It doesn't really bother me as much. I don't enjoy making threads, unlike others, so I don't see a big deal. If they locked it, I tend to trust their judgement. If anything it is usually because of the other people who post in the thread and not the original post.

I have had one locked from Daz, but I completely understood why, and I'm fine with it.

You can't even appeal a ban unless it's a permanent ban. It says so on the error page you get when you try to post while banned. So... Yeah.

OT: I get pissed at warnings because it's just someone sitting there saying "you did something wrong". And, in at least one occasion, I honestly didn't. I can continue on postin as usual, but I'll still be here on BNet with that earning in mind. On the other hand, with a ban, I stop going on BNet. I forget about it and return when I'm allowed to post again.

That's just my mentallity on the whole thing.

Why warnings are argued against more than bans?
Or is it that bans are handed out less than warnings?

Edit: I'm in a Duardo sandwich...

You can still appeal if you truely believe you did nothing wrong.

I don't feel.

  • 10.27.2011 11:34 PM PDT

Warnings are dumb because they're mostly for things everyone else does but you just got unlucky. For example, replying to a thread that is spam or something.

  • 10.28.2011 12:30 AM PDT

I don't even care unless I feel it was wrongful. If I do care, it never gets appealed, anyway.

It's kind of a lose-lose situation.

  • 10.28.2011 12:54 AM PDT

I'm not discriminatory. I don't like any of you.

I had a warning once where I discussed it with the mod and it was all okay, I accepted it.

Then I got banned for having an opinion on a film. Thought that was pretty obtuse, and got ignored when I questioned the detail as to why I'd been banned. As Covy Killer said, it's a bit of a lose-lose situation.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I think I also get more messages related to warnings than bans, but that's only natural because I think I probably issue three or four times as many warnings as bans.

Usually, though, I can easily explain to a user why he or she received the warning and how to avoid it in the future. Once in awhile a user will really fight it and call me names, but I find that for the most part, people want to know what they did wrong and how to prevent warnings from becoming bans in the future.

At least in my own experience, people tend to prefer warnings for the obvious reasons.

Okay, the reason I made this thread was to figure out why so many people were complaining about moderation. After a bit thinking I thought maybe it was because mods use bans more frequently than warnings.

Seeing bans as more severe, I came to the conclusion that if I could figure out how often mods ban compared to warn, and suggest a balance between them, moderation on this site would have a more positive response.

I was actually going to request a Ninja to make a poll in HFCS on how often you use bans compared to warnings. At this point I don't see need for it since the hassle is too much.

So it seems Ninjas already issue more warnings than bans. The reasoning for warnings should be clear enough, and a user could just simply PM a mode for further explanation. So I come to the conclusion that most of bad moderation feedback on this site comes from not messaging a Ninja instead.

Also it seems people are less bothered by bans, correct? Can mods lock threads without warning or ban?

I find it odd how I've never been warned, yet I've been banned 3 times (I think).

Unless it's something really serious, is it not better to warn a user first, and then start on the bans?

Well there's certainly a correlation there. Anecdotally, I'd say that the number of relatively new members (i.e., not very active or only this site for less than a year or two) who receive a warning and then create a thread about bad moderation without messaging a moderator first is close to 100%.

As you get into the range of threads about moderation created by older members, though, that number drops. A lot of these threads (such as coolmike's consistency thread from earlier this week) certainly have a lot more merit and warrant a good deal of explanation and discussion, even if we don't completely agree with the OP's conclusion.

I think that most of the time -- definitely not always, but most of the time -- when a post is bad enough to warrant a ban instead of a warning, the user either knows it's coming or realizes it was appropriate. That, combined with the fact that we simply are issuing fewer bans in total these days, is likely the reason that there seem to be fewer complaints about bans recently.

Oh, and yes, we lock threads without warnings/bans all the time.

So it seems that the current moderation scheme is working better for the mods and gets better feedback from the Community than the last one, right?

I just hope when the new IP busts out, newbies will be comfortable to the moderation. Don't want to scare the away, that's fo' sho'.
