Subject: Quoting a quoted quote

I've been noticing the large amount of space posts take up by quoting a whole quote storm of debate. That got me wondering: what could be done to lower the quote spam?

What do you think about setting a limit of only being able to quote a quote?

(You can still quote multiple times within your post. You just can't quote a quoted quote.)

I usually delete everything in a quote that isn't relevant to what I'm saying.

Most girls I've been with were hesitant about taking it in the mouth. But once they did most would swallow. I got tons of compliments on the taste.

I think it's because of my diet. No fast food, no alcohol and lots of fruit.

So do I.

It is so frustrating! I don't think there is any logical and practical ways of dealing with it though, sometimes it's good for debate, and therefore good for logical answers. However, this is a rarity.

You don't need everything that has been said and what order it has been said in. You only need the bits and pieces you need to make your next point.

In other words: If you attempt to save space by quoting multiple times (and only quoting once within a quote at least) instead of quoting the whole conversation, you will still dodge the anti-quoting-a-quoted-quote filter.

Just like I simpified what I quoted from you to save space.

Key

No... The point of a quote is to reference the conversation that your post is responding to. Most of the time one post is not enough to sum up an entire conversation so as to provide context for those reading the post.

I don't think there is any need for restrictions. Most people, myself included, try to only quote the relevant sections. There could be instances where it would be useful for there to be multiple quotes, and I do not really see "quote storms" as a particular problem, so I therefore see no need for any action to be undertaken.

Which is why the topic usually has a extensive history of who posted what and when already...

In real life conversations don't sound like:
Mom-"Son clean your room!"
Son-"Mom said "Son clean your room" I'm going to do it in a little bit"
Mom-"Son said "Mom said "Son clean your room" I'm going to do it in a little bit" No I want you to do it now!"

For a good reason.

I start having a convo with someone about, say, Destiny (and whether or not it's going to be an MMO). We continue the conversation long into the night until 12 AM (my time). I then go to bed and when I get back on the next day (3:30; after school) there are 5 or 6 pages in between the most recent post and that person's last response to me. This response was "What date did that quote come from?".

I oblige with a date.

Nobody knows what the -blam!- we're talking about.

That's a good point. Perhaps it could be made to allow quoting a conversation as long as the conversation was two+ pages ago. Although, that's starting to sound a little pesky to set up.

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

A quote most recent post option would be nice rather than having to delete the conversation yourself. Of course this is a luxury as it doesn't take that long to delete previous parts of a conversation.

Are you suggesting that all quotes are pointless? Even the first "example" of a quote in real life didn't make sense, so it appears that you are. Posting in a forum is quite different from real life. Conversations here are not direct, and there can be other people's posts between a post and it's reply.

As has been said previously in this thread, quotes can help give a context for your post, as it clarifies what exactly you are replying to. In some cases (as in this current post) it is useful to have more than one quote, to make it clear what exactly the context of the post is. Quote pyramids can, on occasion, be annoying, but I rarely see them get out of hand, so I do not see a need for change.

Being able quote the last post would be useful, but it wouldn't help much. Most of the time, you can shorten the post again, to respond to a specific section, so it wouldn't save a great deal of time. I'd much rather time be spent on other improvements/additions to B.net.

This game me an idea.

What if it automatically does the "quote most recent post option", unless it's a quote from another page. In which case it'll cite which page you're quoting from and allow you to quote more quotes within the quotes.

Over at HFCS we're constantly hard...

Wait...
What?

You know what's great? When someone quotes a 5,000 character post and just replies with something like "I agree".

I think that if a quote exceeds a certain number of characters it should auto-collapse into a drop down.

No, I'm not saying all quotes are useless (you should look at the amount of times I quoted in this topic alone). I'm saying that you don't have to quote the whole conversation when it's right on top of you.

Also (if you read the most recent posts), someone actually helped clear up what you meant by "Sometimes it is useful" and I agreed with what they had to say.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I have not seen many circumstances that I at least have thought quote pyramids were out of hand in a long while. It might be annoying to occasionally see a pyramid, but so long as its not intentionally being used to annoy us, I don't mind them. I already do deal with people whom I see maliciously abusing the quote system.

So, are you suggesting an alteration to the UI so you can filter all but the latest quote? If so; I have no problem with that. I'm always in favor of users being able to self-filter things they don't like.

I'd rather the Webteam do a lot of other things before this though.

Agreed the Webteam has a lot of better things to do.

I was suggesting that earlier. After reading The Freik's post, I really think he has the best idea. Make the space consuming quotes turn into a drop down.

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

I usually only quote the latest response. It doesn't give context to people reading my response pages after what I'm responding too but it works for me and that's all that matters.
