Subject: Do BTB teams actually show mercy (under certain circumstances)?

The 343 forums suck. They're full of retarded kids and mods who got butthurt in the B.net forums for being told that they're bad.

There's a lot of talk in these forums about how people who spawn trap "show no mercy" and that they have no morals and whatever, which is completely ridiculous and those claims hold no merit. Nobody ever has to show mercy on an online game when the objective is to beat the other team.

However, are there people out there that DO show mercy, even in special cases?

I know that sometimes, if a guy on the other team has a mic and IS NOT a d-bag, my team will make an offer: if he gives us an asset (vehicle, power weapon, etc.) from his team, then we'll let him live and hide somewhere as long as he does nothing else against us. So far I haven't seen anybody follow through on that offer but my friends have had a few cases.

Does anybody actually show some mercy in games?

Only towards friends.

Spawnkilling your friends is low.

I don't roll as a full team in BTB, but when I play with a friend, we have rules:

If an enemy is dicking about (suiciding, betraying, driving vehicles off cliffs), we ignore him and leave him to his own business.

If an enemy is driving around on a mongoose, we will jump in the way so he splatters us, possibly gets a multikill, and feels like a badass.

5th Mythic Conqueror of ODST.
If you would like to know more about Mythic difficulty please go to this thread. Thank you.

Please do not send me "recruitment messages" as I'm not interested in joining any groups currently.

Well my team is part of the Good Game Network so we don't hold the objective. Spawn trapping in order to score or to win Slayer games is fine, but being jerks isn't. So if you want to call that merciful you can, I prefer to think of it as good sportsmanship personally.

I've been spawnkilled by friends before. They said me searching as a random brought it upon me.

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.

I remember in Halo 2 especially when myself and my buddies would bro out with the other team in BTB if there were like two people or less on their team. We'd do glitches and whatnot. Good times.

Most of my friends in BTB are pretty good so we can't really spawn trap them, but I agree that that would be low.

Welcome to the internet. Joy dies here.

If it's 'low' to trap your friends, why is it any better against strangers? People have some crooked ethics..

The only 'mercy' you can show in a spawn-trap situation is completing the objective and ending the game. Having somebody hand you a PW so you will leave them alone is just one more way to humiliate somebody and ruin their experience.

Shenanigans like that are why BTB, Team Objective, and Grifball are unplayable for the large portion of the population that doesn't have a team with them.

If my team is purposely sitting with the flag next to the capture point in order to stat whore, yeah, I'm scoring that flag right away. I'm not a fan of kicking ppl when they're down and I don't want to watch others partake in that sort of activity either.

Plus, free flag cap for me!

Boo-hoo. If you don't like your team's stat-whoring, then why are you with that team?

  • 10.30.2011 2:56 PM PDT

IDK. Match-making?

  • 10.30.2011 2:58 PM PDT

O hai

mercy? what is this "Mercy" you speak of?

Who would you care more about: someone who you might see on a near-daily basis, personally know and with whom you converse regularly? Or some random gamertag with no mic that you most likely will not run into again?

Sometimes if it looks like they don't know what they're doing.

I treat everyone as if they have the potential to be one of my friends playing on an alt. I give the benefit of the doubt, forgive betrayals, say "good game" if my mike is plugged in, and generally conduct myself in a respectful manner. Despite the fact that I'm somewhat anonymous and would face no repercussions 99% of the time if I chose to act otherwise.

Edit: I even keep my teabagging as tasteful as possible - generally only after a triple+ kill and at the end of a game where I have 20+ points.

I play Halo for a challenge, when the MM system feels up to giving me one. When it pukes out anything less, I end it as quickly as possible and try again. I'm here for some solid gameplay - not stomping on new kids and their guests.

Good for you, you retain morals whilst on the internet.

Most people will use the opportunity of anonymity to vent their frustrations with real life onto people that can't/won't/don't fight back. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

when i play with a full party and we start spawn trapping them bad once we get our high streaks or whatever we stop using power weapons and vehicles

  • 10.30.2011 3:14 PM PDT

DMR + Sniper Rifle + Sprint= total demolish

I hardly ever have a full team in BTB whenever i play it because all my friends are playing BF3 or GOW3. My point is barely any of my friends will play reach with the exception of 3 or 4.

Sounds like something a jerk would say. Why shouldn't people who just don't have friends who play the game deserve any less respect than anyone else? Playing alone is less fun than playing with friends as it is without people acting like jerks just because they can.

I show mercy in a few situations. If the other team is down two or three people in an MM game and they're getting creamed I'll pretty much stop playing. If I'm way ahead in a Firefight game I'll lay back and let the other person or people get more kills. I'm competitive, so I like to win, but I get know joy from unnecessary cruelty or making others feel totally frustrated. I know how that feels. It sucks and making other people fell bad doesn't make me feel better.

I want to have fun and I want others to have fun too. Plus, if the people who aren't very good just get frustrated every time they play a lot of them will give up and not play. It's just a game, and everyone who plays it should be able to enjoy it.

Nothing wrong with letting yourself go, but you should have the decency to acknowledge that you're abusing the system. Trying to pass stat-padding off as legit gameplay is like claiming you're an expert marksman because you have managed to shoot so many fish in a barrel. If spawn-camping is skillful, then I'm a firefight genius despite the fact that I was invincible and had 300% damage on.

Maybe maybe not.

  • 10.30.2011 3:20 PM PDT

if its like 4-1 i will avoid picking up power weapons. to be honest ill just run around avoiding combat, sometimes even mess with my own teammates to make it a bit more balanced

i dunno, i guess its something i picked up in halo 2 back when the community was a tad more fair in that aspect
