Subject: Toggling the swear filter

A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal.

And from FOX, two phantoms were born.

I'm not saying to turn this off.

I'm saying, why not have an option, so you can choose whether or not to see swear words? On the game Runescape, swear words are replaced with *****.
But there is also an option so you can see the swear words, and so can anyone else who has the option on. Anyone who chooses not to have it on, only sees ****.

Now why not do the same here? We could have an option to see swear words, and people who choose not to, just see -blam!-. Not sure if it's a good idea or not, but toggling it would be useful. That way people who don't like swearing won't have to see it(they can toggle it off) and people who don't mind seeing it, can toggle it on.

I wouldn't mind the option to turn the filter off.

I want a new filter that allows me to filter out words, posts, threads, or even users of my choosing. Man, that would be awesome...

I'm not sure about having this in the mains, however, the ability to turn the -blam!- filter on and off in private groups would be a great addition. At least in my opinion.

Yeah, having it in groups would be great.

I really can't see a problem with having it in the mains, I mean people who hat swearing can just turn it off. However certain words would have to be filtered such as the N- word..

I prefer to not have the option. It would mess up the forums and I appreciate commentary being on a more adult level.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I'm in favor of being able to toggle nearly everything on this site. Especially the profanity filter. People would then be less likely to bypass it, since they themselves could see it, and I wouldn't have to ban people for it.

Yep.

But would there have to be SOME sort of filter to what swear words can and cannot be used?

What makes you think profanity is juvenile?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Also if it was turned off, people wouldn't bypass it becuase it isn't there, lol.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I don't understand why people care so much about this issue. I'm not looking down on you if you do care, I just genuinely don't understand why.

Is it just about wanting to be able to express yourself? Do you giggle insanely to yourself whenever you see an f-bomb? Why is so impossible to say what you need to say without profanity?

Personally, I see no need to remove it. Achronos and the Web Team have clearly made a decision that they do not want to see profane words used in the public forums here, and this being their site, I am okay with that.

Oh lord the profanity!

Sarcasm aside, those words aren't 'profane', so why are they on the 'profanity' list?

But what exactly draws the line?

Why are certain words (Bastard, damn, ass) allowed, and others not? Don't get me wrong, I don't see a reason to modify the profanity filter either, but what actually determines what words justify a censor?

Please tell me you're kidding.

It is not difficult to understand that those who use profanity do so b/c they lack the vocabulary to express themselves in an appropriate manner.

There are many kids on the forums who don't need to be taught that dropping f-bombs is okay. KEEP IT CLEAN!

I thought this was 16+? It's their fault if they get exposed. And they can just toggle it off.

There are some instances where the profanity filter blams out some words that are, generally, deemed either non offensive. The National Socialist Party, for example. I mean, I understand it can be used as an adjective, but there are times where it has merit to be used in discussion. And then, for some reason, the slang word used to describe the female reproductive organ is not blammed out.

I think it comes down to people wanting to be able to type as they talk to one another. IRL.

Because some non profane words are blocked by the filter. If I want to describe someone's orientation, I can't say "-blam!-", I have to say something else that's not blocked. It can be a pain sometimes.

Since Bungie.net has the beta questions, it legally can't allow people who are under 13 to use the site. It's in the terms and conditions.

Well then it's their problem if they get exposed to swearing.

As I said, they could just toggle it off.

Pretty much. If there's the option to toggle it on or off then I have the ability to express myself freely and you -blam!- have the ability to block "swear words" so they don't offend your out-dated sensibilities.

Who the -blam!- are you to judge what is an is not an appropriate manner of expression? That's some fascist -blam!- and you should be ashamed of yourself. Dropping "f-bombs" is -blam!- fine, it's doesn't make you seem any less intelligent. I have the vocabulary to express many complex things, it's just that most often -blam!- is the mot juste. Why do you want to stop me from saying it?
