Guns don't kill people, physics kills people!
They're not gey, they're Hobbits!
Moo...

But then you would see how many people actually type "-blam!-" to censor themselves...

:)

It doesn't really bother me the way it is anyway. I try to avoid using those kinds of words within my replies.

I don't personally think swearing helps a discussion. Even if given the choice and people blatantly use it solely for flaming, then would it be a good toggle option? If, however, people can handle this sort of stuff, then let them have the choice to toggle, hopefully knowing the risks if they do so.

Is it just about wanting to be able to express yourself? Do you giggle insanely to yourself whenever you see an f-bomb? Why is so impossible to say what you need to say without profanity?

I think I have to kinda go with this. I don't really understand the need to use profanity if you are talking about something or trying to get your point across. If there is no real need for it why do it?

Pretty much my view of it.
If you would not use that manner of language in an everyday discussion, whether it be in (for those still in school) class, or (for those of us in the working world) in a working environment among all the employees, then there is now way that you NEED to be profane to express an opinion here either. It's just about being decent. I believe that today people have forgotten how to do this because they feel it isn't socially recognized as necessary. It is. If you speak in that manner in these places it could lead to your dismissal.

If you have to be profane to get your point across, generally you have already lost the argument.

It doesn't make you look bigger, badder, tougher, cooler, by using these words, but rather it's completely the reverse.

There's no real -blam!- need to be on this -blam!- website, so by your own -blam!- reasoning you should get the -blam!- off.

;)

  • 11.01.2011 7:12 AM PDT

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I disappoint Skibur, I'm sure you could have fit more profanity in there.

Anyway, I'm in favor of being able to toggle the profanity filter. Would I personally have it off? No. Am I offended by profanity not in that -blam!- slightest. I swear all the -blam!- time, -blam!- -blam!- -blam!-s. I mostly approve of it so everyone stops -blam!-ing about it, damn am I tired of seeing this issue come up every other week.

Dianna Agron is the epitome of perfection.

Quinntology.

Is it really that necessary? I mean come on, if you can't express yourself without using certain (largely meaningless) words, than you have a real problem with language.

In the b.net profile settings, it would be kinda nice to be able to toggle swearing.

Honestly that option should just be in private groups. In fact it already is for me thanks to the "magic trick" I know. ;)

The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head, The thunder of the drums dictates
The rhythm of the falls, the number of dead's the rising of the horns, ahead
From the dawn of time to the end of days I will have to run, away
I want to feel the pain and the bitter taste of the blood on my lips, again

That's a great Idea, actually.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Ok, im all for the toggling of the profanity filter. It's free speech after all. Let's face it. All kids grow up. They learn new things, and after a while, they hear words that they know are bad and will eventually start repeating them. It's pretty much gaurenteed that they WILL be exposed to swear words. It's just common sense, guys. It doesnt really matter, itll happen sometime or anothet that they will read or hear swearing.

Free speech doesn't apply to this website.

The point is that it's not mature to just drop as many swears as you can in your post to make it better. You can easily say what you want on this website without the use of swearing. From personal experience, people that spew out swears every other word don't tend to have anything good to say. The filter discourages them to do it, because people won't know what they said. Honestly, the only people that this would benefit are the people who evade the profanity filter now.

It may be hypocritical, but I see a big difference between using profanity when speaking and and when writing.

I agree

Rules are rules, the filter is there for a reason. I mean you would see post were people are just say the F-bomb over and over, if the filter wasn't there.

As for the swear filter, seems like a pointless development to me.

I don't understand why people care so much about this issue. I'm not looking down on you if you do care, I just genuinely don't understand why.

Is it just about wanting to be able to express yourself? Do you giggle insanely to yourself whenever you see an f-bomb? Why is so impossible to say what you need to say without profanity?

Personally, I see no need to remove it. Achronos and the Web Team have clearly made a decision that they do not want to see profane words used in the public forums here, and this being their site, I am okay with that.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it forces people to choose their posting style for what most people on this website would agree is an unecessary reason. The fact that it's there almost implies that it's bad to swear. Not having a filter makes things a lot more casual. Small things like this do have the ability to change the atmosphere of the website, that's why it was put there in the first place. If it didn't have an effect then it wouldn't have even been put there.

Achronos has said many times that it's an outdated feature of the website. I've only been here since 2008, but I'm going to take a hunch and say that the filter has been on this website for a very long time. I'm also going to assume that when it was implemented it wasn't for any real reason besides preventing possible future problems. That means that it didn't have any real strong purpose in the fist place if this were true. If swearing really used to create strong issues than it would have been implemented with more purpose.

It probaly can;t be done because it would overload the server or something like that. I might be wrong though.

A question. Excuse me if this has been answered before.

Why are words like ass, douche, and bastard not censored, when s3xuall and its extensions are? The three that are not censored are offensive, while s3xu4ll was meant to be used to described something in relation to sex, or the team someone plays for.

In short, why are some words (that are in some cases, less severe than others) censored, while other words (more offensive and aggressive words) are not?

And besides, doesn't the censorship imply a word more than the actual word does?

Don't animals have free will? They are free too make choices as well?

I find the swear filter pretty silly, personally. Especially when some swear words aren't censored and other words that aren't swear words are censored. A toggle would be a move in the right direction.
