So I've sent out a few PMs, advertised a bit for my group, and generally had a good time. Most people don't mind, in fact they enjoy getting a message or two every now and then. However, some people get very hostile and call me a spammer.

Am I truely spamming? I send messages to people I think would be interested in my group. Obviously I cannot write the same message by hand multiple times...so it makes sense to use a template. Does efficiency qualify as spam? Any insight would be terrific.

Thanks,

pm spam is bull. anyone who gets hostile with you just has a pole shoved to deep where the light don't shine.

spamming through the forums is one thing, but people have the freedom to simply disregard a pm without having a disruption in their lives, or at least a public discussion. Therefore, pm spam could only be regarded as equal to email spam, which is something that can easily deleted and disregarded.

I know that if i get a pm and i don't care about the advertisement, i just overlook it. No big deal. people who get upset have too much time on their hands to waste typing replys to you. If i were you, i'd not reply to their insolence.

Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I agree with sir_brilliant that it is kind of pointless to get upset over a pm. But if you use a template, it could be a good idea to include the person's name in the message. This way, they know that you actually thought about who you sent it to, instead of just picking anyone.

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

While a template is faster, it can be very annoying. I tend to not even care for generic advertisements. Personally, if I were going to send out a PM advertisement, I would make sure it was specific to the member, detailing why they would like the group, etc. It can be very time consuming, but the idea that people may think that you are singling them out for a reason is much more considerate to them than a simple "Join group X. We are dedicated to blah, blah, blah."

But, different people respond to advertisements in different ways, and different people have different ideas. If people get pissed off at advertisements, just ignore them.

Exactly!
They make no mention of the important one here. You!

I have recieved an invitation for a Group, 3 times over, from 3 different people. Yet still, its the exact same message. Mainly describing what the Group's name is.

Personally, I hate group invites. I really do. And even though I do consider it spamming, I pay little heat to it. A simple click and the message is deleted. The sender keeps sending invites, I simply block him with one click of a button.

I consider it spamming and it gets really annoying. Especially when I get the same PM 4 or 5 times from the same person.

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

I use a template...and if i don't get a response I leave the person alone. But I did send a PM to a guy and he called me a "MODDER!" and some other fowl names...so I politely told him to "shove it!" and blocked him from PMing me. That's about the only time that somebody has gotten mad at me for sending an invite.

One message is considered advertising, but after you sent me two messages, I consider you a spammer. Maybe you should make a list of all the poeple you have PM'd, because right now you're blocked by me.

That second message did you in.

If it says in the "Hello, i've seen you active in <forumname here>. Please join my group, we're active and growing and are really great" Without mentioning my name, i immediately block the sender. I DESPISE PM advertising. Unless it's a message actually inviting me to join a group and not just random spams sent to everyone, then i'll probably accept. Otherwise, just don't.

PM spam is whatever you make it out to be. If you get something that you consider spam, then you can go ahead and block that person. If you hate group ads, you can block anyone who sends you group ads. It's as simple as that.
