They're like a competent Cerberus.

Lol at that. When I see them, I don't see a competent Cerberus. I see them described exactly like Cerberus, and just being stupid as heck.

Edit: Spartan IV's and Mark VII MJOLNIR armor fall under the "What the -blam!-?" area. Roughly three months after Mark VI is put out (with only a few sets actually made), they have a number of more advanced Mark VII armor?

Why pay if you can steal. They can get resources from some other places and maybe some companies heavily invested in it knowing the profits they could generate are priceless. With fall of earth most companies died and maybe started working for free.

MJOLNIR, Infinity and a S-IV program aren't ventures that will rake in the dough.

When the only way to make profit is if you survive. If earth fell humanity would die, and all these businesses would be useless. Some would have noticed that and went full scale production on other planets in hope of creating something or anything to win the war.

Whats the use of profit if you are dead.

And if you win the war, your investment shall be rewarded in the long run, get first dibs on certain deals etc. and support from ONI.

You won't be doing much surviving if any of the money and supplies left in the economy go into these expensive ventures instead of reconstruction.

Is there any economy left after the war. Not likely unless you are on the last surviving planets. People are likely being given rations, etc.

Like Britian at the end of World War 2.

So while the people have to be subjugated to rationing, ONI is given a black check to do practically anything they wish? Yeah, that's smart economic policy.

A blank check that will blow and solidify the humanities control of space. Still it is likely that most companies just invested in this and went and started doing business on still surviving planets.

Also most companies are dead, and most projects are likely rebuilding projects, there would not be much to sell, i mean who would buy the state of the art house right now, and who would build it. Most will be busy rebuilding through volunteering. Companies will have to wait some time before making profits. I think they are just investing so that once humanity comes out of the rubble they are the few companies in a better spot. Thus supporting these ONI projects.

Honestly, this is just the "butter vs guns" scenario. I can see why ONI is going with "guns", but I still think going with "butter" is a smarter choice.

That i agree with but when people are paranoid and no one know what is about to happen they tend to become dangerous by trying to protect themselves, with weapons when it could be used for other possession that would be usefull in the long run.

That said, I think ONI is focusing too much on the Elite when the real threat us Venezia.

Meh, in the second post-war book ONI may decide to cripple both threats instead of just sanghelios.

The Spartan IV program could be used to target the Venezian terrorists in the next book for all we know.

Also, I have a hunch Parangosky will die in the second book, leaving Osman to put her "to-screw" list into action by making Venezia ONI's main priority.

I don't see the point in trying to weaken the Elites when they are doing a good job of it themselves. They are beyond backwards on nearly everything and aren't much of a threat to Earth.

Venezia is the true threat.

But do ONI know that is happening. No i believe, and so they are just trying to destabilize them and and then when the Arbiter needs help, poof comes the humans and they have an ally.

Seems like that could all be avoided with just a peace treaty. If we had decent diplomatic relations then we could see the Elites situation. Hell, I'd think helping them with farming would be a great step. Don't give them weapons though.

Had ONI wanted nothing to do with sanghelios at all, there would be a much greater risk of the abiding truth attacking earth because of their radical, fundamentalist views, whereas by arming them they can come to an agreement where they will not war with each other.

Because 'Telcam can't possibly lie.

Lying = Dishonour

Elites have shown no qualms about doing such a thing in previous works in order to further political ambitions, such as betraying the trust of the Kaidon by sending assassins to kill him. Yes, it is still frowned upon and can end up with the dissenting Elder killed, but they will try it if they think that they can get away with it. Besides, Glasslands shows us that they are not really following certain traditions any more, like battlefield respect, so I do not see why 'Telcam must necessarily be sincere.

My only comment to this is... wow.

So ONI knows exactly what Halsey is up to despite there being little to no communication with her since the battle of Reach, and knows -blam!-on other things, but has NO idea of how royally -blam!- the Elites are already?

Retarded...

  • 11.25.2011 3:54 PM PDT

heres my thoughts

We have already been through Halsey's conscience and all her problems with what she has done with the Spartan program. She kidnapped some spartans in an attempt to save them to atone for it and in the end nothing happened.

Now Traviss is trying her hardest to make Halsey out to be the bad guy. I really don't get it, I really don't buy it, and in my opinion it just makes out her ODST characters to seem like they were morons.

Halsey has been the good guy, or at least the good scientist throughout the whole series. Why in the entire book was nothing mentioned about Ackerson's program designed to throw hundreds of unprepared, unequipped orphans at Covenant structres in suicide missions? He was infinitely more immoral than Halsey and he didn't even care. All he cared about was promotion.

And Parangosky, who we are supposed to believe I guess at the end is an old woman attoning for her sins, but a good one (although how she is any different from Halsey, aside from having the oncoming escape of death elludes me), was going to give the Spartan 4 program to him? Yeah, her judgement is sound. The old woman is obviously insane and should have been removed from office forcibly long before the events of this book.

And on that note, the Spartan 4 program is doomed to fail and is stupid to the tip. Let's go back to what we did before that didn't work. Genius. No wonder this woman is in charge. I hope she dies, on page or off page doesn't matter.

None of the new characters are that appealing either. Their willingness to start a war that will kill hundreds and possibly thousands of innocent Sanghelli, women, children, maybe even lapse their entire race in war for a long time is completely contradictory given that they cry like babies when they learn less than a hundred humans were kidnapped to stop millions of more casualties. They all, including BB who should be thinking in terms of absolute logic, as an AI, seem borderline vegetable in terms of thought process.

If these characters become mainstay in Halo, I hope they suffer similar fates to Ackerson. Someone has gotta agree wth me, no?

Also

And I can't get over how annoying the Spartan 4 program is.

Halo is a series about science fiction and action. The main feature of the series, whether they like it or not is the Spartans.

Making it so that the next generation of Spartans are basically slightly augmented ODST, which make no mistake is all they will be, is so dumb and will annoy the fanbase, at least I know it annoys me and I don't know how any hard sci-fi fan or even science-fantasy fan could like it.

Don't call them spartan 4's please, call them orion soldiers or something, they are going to tarnish halo and what the spartan is supposed to be, a warrior trained from childhood for combat.

The spartans in ancient sparta didn't pick 20 year old volunteers to fight in their wars, by that time it was too late.

Also, what the heck happened to the spartans who understood why they had been taken from their parents, and were proud of the role they played in the universe? How the heck did the writers replace them with Serin Osman and her crybaby bs and naomi who seems to be a wannabe ODST?

As some may be able to tell I just read Glasslands and well it is an okay written book, it has... quite a few problems.
