Uh I'm a bit of a noob, what's an "Achronos"?

Hey all,

Bungie is a unique and productive developer. I'm asking why. What's different about Bungie's work environment and structure that gives it such an advantage over its competitors? I've seen the open work environment, the fun mood, the high supply of potential employees, and the access to food. What else gives Bungie the edge?

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

They're independent, which is now a huge part of their work environment. They're not necessarily obligated to answer to anyone but themselves; sure they signed a contract with Activision, but that's not to say they answer to them.

Bungie, in my Business Student opinion, has the advantage of turning it up a notch whenever they like - as opposed to being mush pups.

Previously, during Microsoft? I'd imagine it's just because they're one of the very few developers left that create games that they enjoy playing themselves. They're not the type to spend time looking for that fifteen-figure idea, they're just looking to enjoy what they've made - with they're fans.

This is definitely huge. What about team size? How many people work together at one time?

I've heard the no more than 5 philosophy-

One - Feels isolated, no external motivators, feels overwhelmed, only one mind's ideas

Two - Codependent, easily distracted, hard to establish leadership, can be awkward

Three - Enough members, each member isn't completely vital, enough ideas to build, easy to establish leadership

Four - Lots of ideas, room for division of labor while allowing roundedness, better chance of opposition and unique thinking

Five - Maximum amount of members, manageable

Six+ - Too many members to manage, overlap of labor, distraction and some members gravitate toward a smaller less productive groups of two or three

Great philosophy: "If I don't like using it, neither will my customers." This is great to keep in mind!

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I'm pretty sure they bring in strippers and/or clowns who make balloon animals.

They definitely have positive environment and lack of formalities. What about in their brainstorming sessions? What makes Bungie's employees successful there?

Not just this, their studio is now in what was once a Movie Theatre. Think huge vaulted ceilings, big screens for presentations / meetings and such.

Informal work environment.

Every good sociologist knows how good a informal work environment is... has anyone else even taken sociology?

I have heard horror stories of game developers working their employee's over 100+ hours every week! Now I can understand why Bungie has free snacks! You have to keep your employee's awake and kicking, loaded on sugar and caffeine long enough to finish their work! lol! If they work on a salary then that would suck!

I ran a restaurant for 15 years and only got paid for 50 hours of work per week but most of the time I'd work 90 to 100 hrs. My employee's would wine about how much taxes got taken out of their checks and I'd say "Shut up! I just worked 50 extra hours this week for free!!"
