13.72 billion years in the making.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

I have this handy dandy little "Extended characters" board. It's quite useful. Unfortunately, I can't use it to it's full extent here on Bungie.net.

Some characters, like those of different languages, "¿Puerto ir al baño, por vavor?" are allowed.

Why not characters such as certain math symbols, pictographs, and arrows?

First of all, your Spanish translated to: "Door to go to the bathroom, [something that isn't a word]". Just a heads up.

Those symbols you talked about are directly relative to typing words to other people. These words are the basis and the foundation of the discussion we have. Pictographs are irrelevant to actual conversation and would just lead to excessive spam. Why would you need pictographs and arrows? You can make smileys and, look.... <--- ---> ^^^ vvv ARROWS!!!

Also, no math symbols? Oh... okay... + - / * ( ). <--- Those don't show up for you, eh?

I assume you used a direct translation. Those are always completely wrong. I said "Can I use the bathroom?" Spanish does not directly translate into the English language.

Also, those characters do show up. >?<(*^$@!~

No... you spelled those things wrong. Puerto = door. porvavor is not a word.

Also, on topic, there's a unicode stripper out there somewhere that can help you with some problems you may have with unnecessarily blocked characters. I don't have a link though.

That's because I accidentally didn't put the space in between "Por" and "Favor."

I've been taking six years of Spanish. And again, it does not translate directly. If you were to type the Declaration of Independence into a direct translator, press "translate," and ask Puerto Rican to read it, it would make no sense.

We believe that the universe is unbounded: this is not the same as infinite: the 2-D surface of a sphere, wrapped around a 3rd dimension, has a finite size, but has no end. If you start off in a given direction on the surface of a sphere, you could return to your start point without having to turn around -- you simply go all the way around. But wouldn't that mean the universe has an escape velocity like the earth?

Certain pictographs shouldn't be permitted, however the extensive ban on extended characters is rather excessive tro say the least.

Puerto = Port. As in "Puerto Rico". Literally, 'Rich Port'.

The word you're looking for is Puedo.

You wrote "por vavor". Vavor means absolutely nothing. Favor is what you meant.

I would PM you this, but you blocked me a while ago.

I'll make an OT post here too, I guess. I don't see any reason to have any accents or non-keyboard symbols, considering this is an all English website where there's no need to type in any other language to be honest with you. Even the tilde is pushing it.

This^^

OT, I can only assume it's because some symbols are unwanted.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Spanish lessons aside (and stop arguing about that, please), obviously only the Web Team can fully answer this question. But my guess is that the short answer is because this is a discussion forum, and in the course of normal discussion, extended characters are useless. They are only used for purposeless and distracting shorthand, ASCII art, and gimmick posts such as the upside-down text flipper.

Hi there! be sure to click that homepage link!

Extended characters aren't allowed probably because of a similar reason to why non-Bungie members aren't allowed to embed images:

Because this could get exploited, and many threads could get terrible pictures made from bad font characters.

It would be useful, but think of the trolls!

EDIT: I was trying to convey what Foman just said. Exploitation of characters in a discussion forum could lead to terrible threads e.t.c.

IIRC, there was an exploit with a certain character or string of characters a little while ago that brought about a spell of havoc on the forums.

Don't hold me to it though. I think the only real answer can come from Achronos. Try PM'ing him and see if he responds.

If you have this problem with normal words and units that are normally accepted, it may be because you are copying and pasting something that the forums don't emulate. If such is the case, see if this helps you out.

No, it wasn't a problem I was having.

I was just wondering why certain characters weren't allowed. I wasn't attempting to post something.

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Certain unicode characters can be used for what is effectively vandalism. Notably, one can stack characters atop one another to create an unreadable mess that spans the entire page, or one can flip the direction of the text, which likewise can break the page and most notably there was a CERTAIN CHARACTER which would prevent bungie.net from rendering any text beyond it. As soon as someone posted it in a post? Rest of the page. Gone. It was easier to ban the characters entirely than it was to make it so b.net could handle them properly.

People posting absolute nonsense like "IT R NOT NEEDED FOR DISCUSSION SO WHY HAVE IT" need to stop talking such absolute drivel. If we applied that logic to everything we'd be posting anonymously in block text with no formatting options whatsoever. It's not that it's unnecessary (jesus wept), it's that having that unnecessary luxury brings little benefit for a whole hell of a lot of potential and inevitable disruption.
