Subject: While A User Is Banned....... [Possible Addition to Site]

Spread the love...

I just returned from a 14 day ban. While on my lengthy vacation, I was rather depressed that I wasn't able to, not only to post, but be not be able to see my previous posts.
So, I propose that when a user is banned, their posts still stay there, and instead this replaces the post. If a user wished, they could click open the post and view it, but if not then they could easily skip over it. I say this because sometimes a user gets banned for a weird reason and his other posts, which could be all on topic and informative, would get hidden. Also, the username would be shown instead of the [Example Username] in the picture. So if someone like "J0hNC3nA" posted, then most could easily skip over the post.

If you disagree, that's totally cool. Just say why and maybe I can address the points. Thanks.

Yeah, but I thought it would be good to just throw this out there for community-evaluation.

If I remember correctly, then his response is not in favor of your idea.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I though of only blocking the post the user was banned for, but if it was a spammer they could have several, for example, bad links and then the mod would have to track down all of them individually.

No, your posts being hidden is part of your punishment for being banned. If you don't like your posts being hidden, then don't break the rules.

I disagree.
When a user is banned, that should be that.

If they had good, quality posts before their ban, but go and post something that breaks the rules, they should be held responsible, and punished.

If you could just happily read a user's posts while they were banned, it would defeat the point of blacklisting a user from a forum, and would be rather akin to a warning, except the user wouldn't be able to actually respond to any discussion that may or may not have been created from one of their previous posts.

At least, that's my take on it.

There are instances where this would be useful. Many times users make threads in forums and then are banned for separate reasons. The OP of the thread itself becomes unintelligible, and often people can be excluded from the premise of a thread or vital information in the OP.

That is so fallaciously fabricated that I don't even know what to say other than what I currently am.

OT: there's a spam attack in the member titles thread, or an up and coming hot topic. It takes up 3 pages. We just leave it there with this placemarker despite the fact the thread is totally vandalized, yeah?

The End

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

Having your posts hidden is part of the punishment. With ban evasion being commonplace, at least it means that rulebreakers have one reason to resent getting banned (we can remove all their efforts with the click of a button).

I might be more inclined to agree for 3 or 7 day bans, as the violation is less severe. It would allow unrelated discussions to continue in the absence of the OP and it might also help those who have been banned to see their posts in context.

While I am leaning in favour of the idea, I have two concerns. Firsly, I see little incentive for the webteam to invest effort in changing the system for the convenience of banned users. Secondly, it would make bans a more public affair, and I -as a volunteer- would prefer to solely converse with the banned user, than suffer rebuke from all the banned user's friends. A better alternative, if anything were to be done (I don't see a pressing need tbh), would be for the banned user's offending post(s) to be quoted within their ban message.

It's an interesting idea for the convenience of those who get banned. Although, I get the feeling that this has already been discussed by the web team before it was introduced to the site.

Banning is a form of punishment. Why would the webteam change something that so obviously causes those who are banned great discomfort, in your case being "rather depressed that I wasn't able to, not only post but be not able to see my previous posts"?
