This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

The novels.
It was been stated numerous times that the UNSC usually wins on the ground but at horrendous costs. It's incredible they even win since they are always outnumbered and the Covenants tech is much better.
What books though? They usually win on the ground as opposed to space, not as opposed to the Covenant winning on the ground. The only indication I have been able to find regarding the UNSC's success against the Covenant on the ground comes from the Encyclopedia, and it only says that UNSC victories were scattered and few and usually on the ground as opposed to space. It sounds like they got destroyed in the majority of ground battles too.
somewhere in the fall of reach i believe within the Lines of "The UNSC normally wins on the ground but the covenant can just retreat to their starships and glass the planet".
The best example I can give you is the Battle of Jericho VII, where the UNSC started winning on the ground after three day stalemate in orbit. But since Covenant reinforcements arrived, the ground forces had to pull out, and lost the planet.
