The ranking system for Combat Evolved was fairly straight forward, and each class was easy to recognize. Minors (rookies) were blue, Majors (Veterans) were red, stealth Elites were silver, Special Ops Elites (could throw grenades) were black, and the dreaded Zealots were gold.

Halo 2 complicated things a bit. They nixed the black Elites and replaced them with more common Ultras (white), the Special ops became purple (hard to distinguish from blue Minors), and of course they threw in Rangers, Honor Guards and Councilors for good measure.

Reach kept the Minors, Veterans (now officers), camoed Elites, Rangers, and Ultras, but Zealots were bumped down and made a different shade of red, Generals are still pretty high up on the totem pole, but are out-ranked by Field Marshals (even though there's only one in the game).

Personally, I thought CE had the perfect system, but what about you? Which Elites do you prefer?

I liked the larger variety of Ranks in 2. CE just seemed too basic.

Although the jet black Elites were pretty cool, not a huge fan of the purple in 2.

I think I have to side with the CE ranking structure of the Elites. I thought it was cool how they sort of added more ranks in the later games, but I still like ranks for them in CE.

Agreed. It was simple, but effective. You always new what you were facing and how formidable the foe was in front of you. I like that :-)

I've never liked dinos. I wish Halo had you killing other humans, aiming down sights, flashbangs, etc. It would've been so awesome.

Been on the forums since July 2008.

If you're reading this, I'm probably better than you in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.

Halo 2 Elites by far. The sheer variety of ranks and colors kept the battles fresh and interesting.

I have to say reach elites, not for the colours or differences, but just how cute they are. LOL! I was playing lnos earlier, and just as we get dropped off onto the corvette, theres an energy barrier with a few rangers inside. I looked down to see about 3 rangers just staring back at me. SO cute!!

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

Halo CE.

1. They appeared much more alien like in 2001, especially with the ambient surroundings.
2. All rank of elites (Minors, Veterans, Stealth, Zealots) could be viewed on any difficulty. In Halo 2, you would only encounter higher ranks on higher difficulties.
3. Zealots could jump -blam!- far AND high in Halo CE.

I agree here, especially with #1.

Sometimes the elites don't even seem all that different from humans anymore.

reach elites are best elites. They look the most intimidating and can be quite fierce.

Oh yeah, since somebody does not believe what YOU believe; that makes us vapid...
I cannot grasp that what you call "Something happened to nothing, and that nothing became something, and it was smaller than than a period."

I'll always remember the Gold elites with energy swords fused to their hands in CE.

I had a contest with my brother (alternating turns) to see who could melee a gold sword elite (on legendary) to death without back-smacking him. It wasn't easy but eventually I won.

And they sounded more sinister in CE. In 2, they just sounded...off, when speaking English.

I liked the Halo 2 ranks the best. There were so many to memorize and I had a blast figuring out where they all fit.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Either CE or 2.

Whilst I liked the simplicity of CE and how easy it was to identify them, I loved the addition of the Arbiter, Honour Guard and Councillors.

Reach's Elites look like wank. The only ones that don't look absolutely awful are the Minors, Officers and Stealth Operatives. Generals look like giant bumblebees, the Ultras and Rangers look terrible compared to the ones in Halo 2/3 and the Zealot/Field Marshalls juse don't look right.

Halo 3/Halo 3:ODST.

That wasn't an option. And there weren't any live Elites in ODST :-P
