Subject: Master Chief

It's not camping, it's holding the designated location.

What was the canon reason for MC not getting a promotion. I know Bungie did it so it wouldn't confuse people because Master Chief is a actual rank (Master Chief Petty Officer), but what is the canon reason why he never got one?

Yes but Noble 6 is a Lieutenant, so spartans can get officer ranks.

they were also in the ARMY. MC was in the NAVY or something like that. different branches means different ranks.

Master Chief Petty Officer = NCO, Lieutenant = officer. That difference is universal.

i dont know what country you are from but in the u.s. a marine rank is considered higher then an army rank because of better training. should the marine switch over to the army they automatically get a raise in rank and pay.

navy ranks are different then marine ranks and both are different then army ranks. it doesnt matter if the officer thing is universal which each branch has its own officer requirements and ranks to get to it so it cant be universal, master chief is the highest rank that the branch that john 117 was a part of.

so no, he cant get any higher unless he switched over to a different branch that had more ranks past that but i dont know how the military works in that aspect in the halo universe.

you do understand that the ranks in a video game are directly the same as in real life? bungie even said that during Reach.

John will never be promoted because he is suppose to follow orders not give them. Kurt was promoted to train the SIIIs and he passed that down to Fred.

That reason for the other and unneeded promotions of noble 6 and carter are unknown.

  • 11.03.2011 11:03 PM PDT

To clarify, both John-117 and Noble Six are Navy personnel. "Lieutenant" is used in Army, Marines, and Navy, but Noble Team are Navy. The members of Noble Team are operating under Army handlers, and they are given officer ranks so that when they operate around non-Spartan military, they are not bossed around. It's operational freedom.

As for the Marine/Army thing Special J13 is talking about; it's true that sometimes if a Marine changes branches to become a soldier in the Army, they may give him a higher rank, but an Army soldier that is one rank higher is not equal to a Marine that is of a lower enlisted level. For example, if somehow there were circumstances permitting this, an E3 Marine would never boss around an E4 soldier.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Actually, Noble Team was under the jurisdiction of the Army but their members were still in the Navy because they were SPARTANS.

-The ranks of Commander (Carter), Lieutenant Commander (Kat), and Lieutenant (Six), are officer ranks in the Navy.

-Emile, Jorge and Jun all have the ranks of Warrant Officer, Chief Warrant Officer and Warrant Officer respectively, this ranks were above that of Master Chief Petty Officer.

The reason they had ranks that high was so they could have more freedom while on the field so say, a sergeant couldn't be all like "Hey, go do this!" and take them out of a far more important mission. But yeah, in essence, any member of Noble Team could order around John-117 due to their higher ranks.

I would vote MC as the next governor of california.

MC never ranked because if he did he be sitting behind a desk. Then what good would he be to the UNSC?

MC never ranked because there was no Cr system in previous Halo's

LOL

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Maybe because he was meant to be a soldier? Not some guy behind the scenes giving orders.

3 years and only 1 ban, try harder next time noobs.

IIRC he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer at some point in TFOR. Most of the time he wouldn't have had to worry about some jack ass Marine lieutenant taking giving him a conflicting order, so he didn't really need a promotion.

Which is why all of these Master Chief vs Noble Team / Six threads are pointless and redundant.

Which is a fail on the part of the UNSC. Yes, let's give tactical command to the people who weren't even trained before Master Chief was already fighting.

Also, out of all the S-IIs, John was seen as the best leader, yet Jorge, who shows no leadership skills above that of other S-IIs, is a higher rank? Fail, fail, fail, fail, fail.

343 better rank up the Chief, but Bungie might have screwed them on that one. Having the name everyone knows him by as a direct rank, means you can't promote him without changing his known name.

You fail to understand that is how real life works as well.

How many experienced soldiers on the field answer to Lieutenants fresh out of officer training? A dang good many. Often those Sergeants (as I know) give advice to the new officer, but they follow orders.

So it's not unthinkable that somebody would get officer rank/command over somebody who's been in the military for a good deal longer.

WO is a higher rank but Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy is still harder to obtain and more respected. As for some of Noble having officer ranks, I have no clue.

United Armed Forces

Chief isn't a strategist.

He's a killing machine. It's what he's built for. He shouldn't waste his time commanding troops - that's for the spartan washouts(failed augmentations).

His job is being on the front lines, killing covies.

(or, well, was.)

  • 11.06.2011 3:38 PM PDT

United Armed Forces

Noble team had higher ranks so that they wouldn't have to report to so many people if required to. They're not supposed to exist.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Because Spartans are supposed to be foot soldiers, not commanders of armies nor fleets.

  • 11.06.2011 3:40 PM PDT

Yeah, as others said, Master Chief is a pretty dang respected rank. A military vet friend of mine actually said in most cases a fresh LT would actually follow the orders of a Master Chief Petty officer.

And, if John got promoted... I'd only see that if they actually gave him more ingame characterization/actually had him acting as a leader.
