I'm not looking forward to any meteor more than Apophis. If it hits, it will be a sight to behold, so long as I am not trapped on any landmass on the Pacific ocean at the time.
Why would they name a potentially apocalyptic asteroid after a god of chaos and destruction?

It's probably going to burn up in the atmosphere before it hits earth.

Based on what I have read, it is about the size of an aircraft carrier. If it were to enter out atmosphere on an entry trajectory (highly unlikely at this encounter) it wouldn't burn up, it would impact.

But its path has been plotted repeatedly and it is going to pass by the Earth. Close enough that it will be within the orbit of the Moon (approx 250k miles and just under 400,000km).

In planetary distance, that is the same as a bullet passing your head within arms reach. Not a hit, but closer than you want something whizzing past.

"It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri, and the other nearby stars, it will be a species very like us, but with more of our strengths and fewer of our weaknesses, more confident, far-seeing, capable, and prudent. For all our failings, despite our limitations and fallibilities, we humans are capable of greatness."-Carl Sagan

well, atleast they detected this early, they say we'd only have a 1 hour warning if one was on an impact course. oh, and nukes wouldn't work because like in futurama, their density/solidity is always unknown. and that could just turn a giant rock into a giant rock shotgun.

Any news on that?

It's about the size of an aircraft carrier.

I'm positive you won't be able to see it from the earths surface.

For The Lulz is a worthier cause than For The Win.

From the skies to the ground, I'm the one that'll reign destruction down on you from behind the wheel and the flight stick. Keep your eyes on the rear view mirror, or you may be eating exhaust aside the road, riddled with holes.

My sniper is hungry for souls.

If at first you fail, fail again so that you succeed by wrapping your fail around the continuum into the win zone.

It turned out that they miscalculated. Apophis will not, in fact, hit the earth. That's old news.
