The Ghost sucks in this game.

That may be so, but its better than nothing.

Goat
Anymore progress on Phase 2?

I'm rebuilding it again...

Mainly because of Phase 2. The duration of a normal walk from spawn to drop point was too short, so I gotta design things in a way so Phase 2 connects Phase 1 and Phase 3.

It's a very delicate process to design this. Not to mention tedious because I'm dragging walls from the 'library' (they're all neatly lined up) when I'm building.

No deadline as of yet, but (and I've said this a million times) I'm getting closer to the sweet spot. The previous version taught me a lot with the side building, so I'm trying to preserve that dynamic in the redesigns.

This would be a lot easier if my forge buddies ever got online -___-

Let me explain something:

When I build an Invasion map, I always make sure first phase has a 'money shot'.

In simple terms, Money Shot is what the player first sees when they spawn and move forward. Is there an AA battery in the distance? If the player sees that upon first spawn, that's your 'money shot'. If the player spawns and sees a huge army of Covenant vehicles coming their way, that's the 'money shot'. It's that brief moment where the player sees something memorable on your map right at the beginning of the match.

So when I'm building, I have to constantly ask myself "What will the player see when he rounds this corner? What about when he climbs this ramp or jumps down this elevated platform?" I take special care to analyze all of these angles. I've rebuilt many maps simply because the money shot wasn't strong enough.

Invasion is a lot deeper than players are willing to admit. That's why I'm going to teach everyone as soon as I finish with this map.

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

I am convinced.

I would love to reserve a spot in a test run in the future. I am not a big Invasion player, but I am all for community involvement and helping others improve their projects.

Ever wonder what's up there?

After playing some Rush on BF3, I've come to the conclussion Reach's Invasion was a huge nail by bungie. Most fun/original gametype the game has.

I'm not making anything up. Invasion is a lot more complex then players seem to realize. Everything I will be teaching is already there. I'm just interpreting and translating it to simple, memorable terms.

Going back to the Money Shot, yea it's a name I made up but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist otherwise. Every map/campaign mission has that memorable kodak moment. Some of the best Invasion maps I've played had really awesome Money Shots.

It's called "immersion"

Judging by your post I'm going to assume most of the games you've played are FPSs. These games all fail epically at immersion. Immersion is the state that a player feels like they are in the game environment and story and it adds another level to the game by making it feel, to the player, like the game events are actually happening to and around the player.

The most important things for immersion are atmosphere and setting.

If you don't have those you can't begin to give immersion to the player. The closest to immersion the shooter Halo: Reach gets is the opening of Nightfall. the night sky is dark and beautiful and you get caught up looking at the view, then you instinctively worry as you hear the hum of the Covenant Phantom making a patrol. Then you get to watch as the camera man step over the pitfall Noble 6 just stepped over.

It's the best Cutscene in the game as far as immersion goes. It's too bad, but predictable, that game rest of the game couldn't feel like that.

3 things I'm worried about the most:

1. Immersion
2. Budget
3. Gameplay

In no particular order.

New location altogether that can link up with the path of the first phase?

I have to build first phase in a way so that it directly leads into phase 2. phase 2 is reverse core, and i want that to be a considerably long walk from point A to point B. This way players experience the escort portion in full, rather than cut it short by placing the drop point too close to the core spawn.

I wish what I was drawing on paper would come to life in 3D as I was doing it. Google Sketchup is too much of a hassle

If only you were designing this for a PC game where the budget on geometry is much higher.

I'm gonna try a taboo and build second phase first. This way I can work the other two phases into it.

I never build phase 2 first unless I'm having difficulty linking phase 1 to phase 3.

Suggest modelling it after a building in ODST? There's a particularly larger area on Mombassa Streets that's pretty much a big incline in effect. Perhaps you could do something similar?

First phase starts on a level ground, second phase has you going beyond the one-way door deactivated by Phase 1 and take the core up the incline, and phase three has you entering a structure for assault or something.

Reach's Forge Would do better on PC, but would be considered substandard in comparison to the other map makers.

We need a new Xbox.

I'm almost done. Once the layout is solid building should take 2 hours or less. Then I'll throw up another walkthrough and change this thread to a playtesting signup.

Only thing in the way of that is the layout, which I'm hard at work on. Already crumpled up a dozen designs (too lazy to erase).

I'm talking about full geometry editing a la Halo Custom Edition map editor. At least that way he could import ODST geometry and textures to build extremely accurate remakes of the ODST areas.

Only if you're okay with having half finished maps that don't have anything except Phase 1.

Still need a new Xbox. Reach just goes to show that devs need to have more power in the consoles they make games for.
