How's the map coming along, Goat? I'm anxious to play it


Just finished building the Spartan initial spawns. It's in a shielded building and they have 3 exits out, one of which is elevated. Ergo, spawn-kill proof (though I can't guarantee an extended lifespan once you're out of the building's safety).

Next up is designing phase 1 so that it's action-packed, but not cluttered or chaotic. Doing that is a little difficult because it's taxing my wall budget. I got Phase 2 and 3's design down on paper already. The main trick is to try to include the building for map control, and to make sure it plays a role in all 3 phases.

Goat, I really admire your persistance. I would love to play test this map when it is finally ready. I like your ideas for this map. Your idea of dropping in and losing shields is really cool, and the city style backdrop is really cool. If you could find a way to make it dark like in ODST, this map would be near perfection.

I'm just getting back into Reach, but I'm really glad to see that the forging community is still active.

Yea Phase 2 is usually the most difficult to build. It serves as a gateway between the first and last phases. Most people build either P3 or P1 first, and getting them to link up together is what P2 usually does. It's a challenge because the transitions have to be smooth.

I have a few paragraphs written about P2 in the Invasion guidebook. I'll go more in depth later.

Thanks, but unfortunately I had to drop the...well, the drop. I loved it but it was hindering the safe spawning of Spartans and it wasn't flexible enough. That, and it cost a hefty 500 bucks to set up.

I wish I could make it nighttime. I already have street lights that could have lit up the way :)

Since I'm building in the sky box, the filters look a lot better than they do otherwise. I might leave purple on...

I think when people see the design they'll know it's ODST.

How I kill? Simple effective Head shots and Beat downs. My newest favorite saying? Bullet meet head, head meet bullet. I would love to say this to a current telemarketer. I now have come up with Operation Laser. Operation Laser is the basis of basic lasering. Spartan Lasers ftw!

Hey goat, what if you did an objective where the ODSTs have to bomb a district gate to clear the path for bigger vehicles? Also try looking at Halo 2's Earth levels. Like here and here.

That's an interesting idea. I might make that the phase 2 objective instead of bombing the doors to the Oliphant. Though I'm not sure how Tanks would play. I have to make better vehicle paths then...

I'm just coming out of a roadblock with Spartan initial spawns. They have to be elevated because the way I have them now--even with shield doors--is still easy to camp. Figure I'll save myself the 400 bucks I'm blowing on the shield doors and just elevate the spawn instead, thus deterring (albeit slightly for some) camping of their initial spawns.

And like I said looking at the Halo 2 Earth levels could give you a better idea on scenery. I'd make any vehicle spawn look like they were on bridge, but the bridge that goes over the map collapsed and broke, so you pull a 'Dutch'(y'know from ODST) and jump down in a 'hog or something.

EDIT: And of course, if you don't mind the fact I sound somewhat young, I could come help you out. Maybe forging with someone else inside the map could help out the creative process.

Appreciate the ideas! I'd like it to remain a solo project for the moment so that I overcome the challenges on my own. But once it's done I don't mind sending you an invite to garner more in depth feedback.

Nope,

Upon the release of Reach I posted several threads and replies about Invasion and some potential problems that needed fixing, as I recall a good example was how on Spire the Spartans should spawn with considerably more pistol ammo to level the playing field.

Goat then persisted to argue about how all of my points made were flat out wrong, for page, after page.

Flash forward several months and he made a post using all of my points and said they were his ideas. The reason he did this is because he has never, and will never, have a -blam!- clue what he is talking about.

Goat, since this thread got locked I'm just gonna post my reply in this one.

You have me convinced that you can make an Invasion map because you seem to have a good understanding of its faults. However, even if you could make Invasion better, I still would not enjoy it. I don't like the idea of spawnzones that can be camped, I don't like progressing weapons, and I don't like the idea of Elites vs Spartans. If it was Spartans vs Spartans maybe I'd play. But no matter how you slice it, it'll always be in favor of one team or the other.

So we can agree to disagree. Good luck, and don't let anybody discourage you.

I posted one on waypoint the same day as this thread, but there's no necessity to bump it or post a new one until the map is finished. This thread has (and hopefully still is) serving its purpose.

Besides, Waypoint's forums always show an error page for me so I'm not going to bother with it. When it's done I'll share it over there.

From what I hear with the cartographers, they're looking for Infection maps right now. If 343 really is continuing forge map integration then Invasion will come in the spring (right after Race).

Spartan vs Spartan would be quite fun I'd imagine...

It's just that the whole gimmick behind Invasion was Spartans vs Elites with the game progressing in tiers of combat. But again, that's just what Bungie wanted it to be...

While you were busy insulting him over his Halo 3 rank (which nobody cares about anymore), he was digging through the depths of Invasion to understand what was wrong and what could be changed. That's why he is the one who's going to revolutionize Invasion, and you're probably the only one who wants to be in his way.

I bet you don't even know what Phase Design or Accommodation Theory means. Hell, you don't even know how to set up an Invasion map. You think being a 50 automatically makes you a pro map maker too?
