It would be really nice if you hosted playtests for other people's invasion maps as well. It is extremely hard to get enough playtesters now for a custom map. I tried to playtest mine and no one showed up. I cried for 2 hours.

I plan on it actually. The invasion playtest will be for invasion maps in general. I have a plethora of maps I'd like to test and I encourage others to bring even more.

hopefully soon cause I'm almost done with the ODST map's conceptualization.

Get your map ready! If not this weekend then this coming week will be testing, and so will the entire month of February.

Have you actually tried using forge world's terrain? Maybe that might conserve some walls.

on the contrary it actually used more walls when I had to connect the terrain to the city.

I'm gonna try though to incorporate it and see where it leads me. It might be my best option.

Could the cave next to hemorrhage be used as an intermediate section between two phases? Its blocked off by a gate, because of construction or some other reason, and is opened by completing a phase.

Could you start in the coliseum?

I would not try the coliseum.. There are a lot of lighting and framerate issues for me. Also, Z-fighting becomes really common.

I'll either end in the quarry or start in the quarry. Either way, terrain will need to be used in order to conserve budget, improve performance, and enhance gameplay.

Ya the coliseum is plagued with lighting discrepancies and it's pretty obvious when you forge a map in that location.

I might be building a sort of 'indoor park' like those sections where Engineers usually were in ODST.

The guys at HaloWheelMan made an interesting point though that changing the loadouts of Invasion too much breaks consistency and forces them to change strategies/tactics that they've perfected for well over a year now. As such, I will be working to change loadouts as minimally as possible. Some loadouts will be omitted for obvious reasons; however, I will attempt to keep them the same, save for the addition of the Spiker and Plasma Rifle. Any other changes are subject to playtesting.

Talking about using natural terrain, maybe curve some of the map around the gorge in between Alaska and Montana? As well as conserving items, with the cliff beside you, it could add the feeling given by the forged towering buildings/walls that your low down and surrounded. Not sure but, the pieces might also have dark lighting in there, adding to the dark ODST feel without using FX.

You know what your doing but im just sayin'

Funny story, the second concept I built back in 2010 actually had the city built between alaska and montana, and the cliff face added a nice feeling to it.

It's too narrow now though. The quarry is my best option unless i find flatter terrain somewhere. I've also built versions by the beach in the Canyon, but I ran into soft kill barriers when I was out over the water.

UPDATE: Territories/Assault/Core is still on the board for the map. However, loadouts have been altered slightly to be more consistent with that seen in matchmaking.

Drop Shield and Camo will join Sprint, Evade, Hologram, and Armor Lock for the map. The only AA that will be excluded at this point would be Jetpack. If it is possible, the map will be killzoned appropriately to include the Jetpack.

I'd also like to mention that it is much, much easier to build a map with Elites attacking than it is to build for Spartans attacking. Elites have more tools to get offense done, whereas with Spartans yo're only starting with the AR, Pistol, and Sprint. This makes Spartan offense really straight forward and one-dimensional in a way. Hopefully I can build the map in way so that it doesn't come off as one-dimensional.

Also, no DMRs will be available for Spartans in Phase 1. This is because Elites will have NRs, and the last thing you want is for them to pick up DMRs off of dead Spartans, effectively putting Spartans at a disadvantage after the initial rush.

1 per fireteam/3 total, and they'll have a reduced clip because Elites will be able to pick up Pistols from Spartans.

When the hell are you going to finish this map?


This weekend.

I was actually thinking of building an entirely different Invasion map today alone and having it ready for testing while I finished up this one.

Though I have good news--If I didn't run with HaloWheelMen yesterday I probably wouldn't have been able to finish the ODST map. They gave me a plethora of pointers which I will use to make the map better than it could have been before. I already have a lot of new ideas that I'll be incorporating into the map.

Rest assured, it seems as though I've amassed a decent following on Waypoint of players who want Invasion to be reduced to 2 players local. This, combined with the Invasion maps posted here, at HWM.com, and elsewhere on the interwebs could mean that we'll be seeing lots of new Invasion maps soon, in addition to my own.

Lots of greatness will be happening this spring!
