SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I've been wondering for some time how Bungie will be handling their account system when the new IP drops. It seems likely to me that there will be some sort of site addendum complimenting the game here, as has been the case since Halo 2 stats. While its true that we don't know what their IP will be, thus don't know what sort of data (if any) will be included in new site features, its a safe guess that there will be something here.

So, on that note, how do you think Bungie will handle the accounts here? We currently use Microsoft's WLID system for account creation and use. Though there are strong indications that Bungie's new IP will be multi-platform. So, how do you think Bungie will incorporate systems other than or on top of WLID for the account use here?

Will some of us retain our current WLID unchanged? Will PSN accounts be added? Will Bungie allow both methods, then merge them into their own account system which doesn't differentiate between WLID, PSN, and whatever other networks Bungie will be using? Will Bungie just start up an all new system that you have to sign up for, similar to EA's network?

I honestly have no idea. I also doubt we'll be hearing anything official about it anytime soon. Certainly at least not until Bungie announces their new IP.

Though, that doesn't mean we can't speculate. That does not preclude us from predicting and discussing. So Community at large, what are your thoughts? Preferences?

Disclaimer: To avoid causing confusion due to some people possibly mistaking me for a Bungie Employee, or someone who knows anything about what's going on at all for that matter, let me say this clearly: I don't know any more than you. I'm just a fan, and know nothing about the new IP, accounts, or any of that. We are all equally in the dark. Don't mistake anything I say as being official. Its not, fellow plebeians.

I personally think Bungie will convert all the current accounts over to a new system. Similar to EA's network. I think that you'll have to sign up on PSN or Xboxlive or here on the site, and the account will be connected to each respective network that applies. I have no reason besides gut feeling as to why I think this. It just seems to be cleaner.

So, what do you all think? I'm curious about the Community's ideas. Pros and Cons of various methods, limitations, etc.

-edit-

Fixed typo in title. That's what I get for early morning posting with no sleep.

I was thinking about this earlier. I think they might create new accounts using their own system, whilst having the ability to link GT and PSN.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

I hope we retain the titles, but have the ability to change our names once. :D

That seems pretty reasonable. It gets the job done on all conceivable fronts. It would make sense given Bungie's M.O. on semi-streamlining UI too.

Also, as an addendum, feel free to add whatever else in the account future territory that you think will come to fruition. Such as a friends list or other methods of account customization that you think have a shot at becoming reality.

Do you think creating our own "Personal" page would have a shot at becoming reality on Bungie? Or is that too Social Networky?

My thoughts, too.
The only issues with that is that they may loose some API features. I don't know much at all about the tech behind WLID, but there is a possibility that through replacing it with a "Bungie Login", we lose certain features. (Achievements, etc).
However it may be possible to link a WLID to the "Bungie Login", thus losing no features at all, I think.

From there we can add all sorts of features, friends lists, as you mentioned, possibly a social aspect. Imagine a feature where we have a live feed of peoples requests for people to play whatever there new game is.
Using Halo as an example, as we don't know what their new IP is, here are some examples of posts you could find in the social feed:
* John Citizen, and two other friends are playing Living Dead in Matchmaking, on Xbox 360.
* Marie Curie unlocked the achievement, Pink and Deadly.
* Ben Johnson is holding an open Custom Game lobby with the description, "Infection testing".
Obviously we would use Profile names instead of IRL names, but you get my drift.

Another possibility, or an extension of the social feature, would be XBL Beacon integration, where you could send game invites from the 360, to the site, requesting for someone to join your game.

The possibilities are endless...

Edit: Strafing from the Social idea, it would be great to have our own blog page, so people can follow what people are up to.

I am...whimsical today.

I'd never considered that a break from Microsoft would mean that the WLID would be optional.

I've not really kept up with the Halo transfer, but I assume that all the Halo gamedata will be moved over to a 343i run system.

If not (and the data is not simply scrapped) I assume they will have to at least keep the WLID, and integrate it with the PSN version (can you tel how little I know about this yet?).

How do other multi-platform forums / services deal with this issue?

My hopes would wish for a login system based on email, where WLID and other accounts can be associated using a separate function under account options.

Or better yet, we do away with individual game data, and even user accounts while we're at it.

Do you think we'll lose any of the old game forums?
I think they will get condensed into a "Halo" forum.

It's pretty obvious the new IP is multi-platformed, so I hope users that were already on Bungie.net before the new IP can just keep using the Microsoft Login.

Yes. PSNID

I'd imagine nothing would change, except for PSNID being added for users. I'd like to see a little icon or something that would differentiate users (a little XBOX icon for WLID users and PS icon for PSNID users).

I can't imagine a complete overhaul. I'd hate to lose my account, or have it start from Day 1 again :(

I hope if we have to switch, I hope we have some sort of option to merge our old accounts with our new accounts.

Surely they would just update the old (active) accounts...

Key

I see no reason to change over from WLID considering it is infinitely easy to create one. It's as if they made you sign up with a gmail account. There's no reason to change it just because of the fact that new gamers from other platforms are coming in.

Will they let them link their PSN names instead of Gamertags? Almost certainly. But should they change the basis for signing up for the website? I don't think so.

As for the actual EASE of creating a member account, (due to issues with "people" like JohnCena, Shane Dawson, Jane etc.), I think that may need looking into. I have no idea how they would figure it out, but the "alt" 'system' (as it were) needs tweaking (if possible) in my opinion.

The same thing crossed my mind a while back, and I think they'll just end up integrating whatever it is PSN uses alongside WLID.

I hope it requires users to have an Xbox Live or PSN account to create an account on here. That way people can't just make pointless alts. It should however be able to detect users on the same IP. I think with a new flush of community members (PSN) it would help in investing lots of time into one account.

It's same to assume that many people on Bungie.net have multiple accounts for personal use. But it's grown to a level that it's taken for granted that nearly everyone DOES have these accounts when thats not it at all. However I see a change for this in the near future, and Bungie being able to detect this.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Here is what I think (hope):

There will be some kind of Bungie hosted sign in where once you make your account you have the options to link both your PSN account and xbox live account.

becuase, PSN doesn't use windows live account and that is how Bungie links our stats.

I hope we can like change our sign in email/password so it isn't tied to the windows live ID.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

At first it seems like having a system where an account could be created through WLID or PSNID would work fine. The problem comes when people have an account with both Microsoft and Sony. They would have to create two accounts, or a joint account. The first seems unnecessarily frustrating, and both seem inefficient, and just gets worse the more platforms are involved.

The other option would be a new "Bungie ID" that would be able to link to any account that the user has. This would integrate a user's PSNID and WLID, and eliminate any complaints of favoritism between the account types that would undoubtedly arise from the first method. If the webteam was feeling really ambitious they could integrate other things like gamecenter (iOS) (and the android counterpart) into the Bungie ID that would allow full Aerospace stats integration with the site.

The problem with having users all create new accounts is that people would lose their accounts, which they have spent a large amount of time with and become very attached to. Even if people chose the same names you would never really be sure if evilcam was actually evilcam. This problem could be solved by sending users a link (either through PM or the associated email) that would bring them to a special account creation page that would allow them to keep their old name and join date (and other settings).

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Bungie should delete any account that isnt 7 years old and make the peons starts over again.

  • 11.05.2011 7:31 AM PDT

I would think they'd just add in support for PSN accounts.

I mean a huge part of the website is stat tracking, and I don't see how you can get the personalized detailed stat tracking without having your account linked to your gamertag or your PSN id.

just guessing, since they've been hiring people for PS3/PSN i think they will either find someway to add PSN to the WILD, or they will just launch a whole new site altegether, changing everything. Also knowing that they really dont like to stick with the same thing over and over again; i would bet on the later (but what do I know, i'm just a fan).
