SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Lots of good speculation so far.

I agree that it would be a bad idea to scrap WLIDs altogether. I really doubt Bungie would ever do that. I can't remember precisely when Bungie switched from PERL to ASP.NET, but I do remember that the prior Bungie accounts were switched to WLID (or whatever WLID was called at the time). I have no idea what was involved in that switch, but it was relatively seamless. I'm sure Bungie could do it again if the situation called for it, just going the other direction.

It looks like the separate Bungie network account, with the ability to link WLID and PSNID is the prevailing prediction. Makes sense to me.

I know its a big jump to go from one speculation as to how accounts will be handled ancillary to a network switch, but I'm also curious as to what you think might also be added. I don't have a PSNID, so I don't know what other goodies come with it sitewise. I'd imagine there's a wealth of potential benefits. What do you think we could get/do with that addition?

PSNIDs have their own customizable avatar system right? Perhaps PSN avatars or something to that effect for our site? Some kind of Bungie addition to the gameworld/lobby on the PSN? At the very least, a Bungie T shirt hopefully. Thoughts/suggestions/speculation on that?

I hope we retain the titles, but have the ability to change our names once. :D

But... What if you don't want to change names and someone steals your name D:

Damn, that's a lot of questions, but the one I'm going to focus on is the avatars one.

I really hope they don't allow PSN avatars. Choosing from the ones given to us (barring the web team and ninjas) is part of the charm of the site. Having PSN users be able to have their own custom avatars and "betraying" (for lack of a better word) their xbox-using-fans by not allowing them to have custom avatars would not go over well. Undoubtedly so.

Also, I'm just against custom avatars in general. It would make the site seem less official and less "clean" as it were. The ones we have are fine as there are a myriad of them to choose from and they vary from medieval soldiers to Minotaurs to purple haired gun ladies to master chief to aliens to steampunk pirates to (already) customizable Halo 2, 3, :ODST, and :Reach emblems.

Yeah i hope they dont add something to distinguish PSN or Xbox users unless you click on your profile. If they did do it, people would just cause flamewars on a massive scale due to PSN and Xbox fans.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say they will follow along the lines they did with Crimson, and intergrate Facebook IDs.

That was entirely Harebrained Schemes. Bungie probably won't go the route of using FIDs. That would be silly for a video game website. It doesn't even make sense logically.

Why does it not make sense? It seems to be the trend with a lot of major websites. And I'd bet dollars to donuts that most users now and in the future will have a FID.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Implementing an internally managed account system that is still secure, linkable to WLID, PSN, etc. but is not as open to abuse as the WLID system (for example, its ability/flaw/feature that allows one person to create virtually unlimited accounts without restriction) would be a godsend.

As to the creation, details, management, security and abilities of that system? Especially how it would balance between ease of creation for new, non-malicious members and restricting/controlling/preventing the creation of alt-armies? Those are details that while interesting, a part of me hopes that no one outside of the few who make and manage the system will know the specifics of it.

But, again, this is a video game website. Lots of people don't want to have to link their personal life to a forum thye go to that is, essentially, about video games. I know I wouldn't want to link my personal Facebook to the site.

Private lives are best kept separate from anonymously social lives.

And how difficult is it to create a WLID? Just about as difficult as it is to create a Bungie.net account: not at all.

Why change over to a new system when the one they currently have has absolutely no faults at all?**

**This is strictly based on the fact that you can sign up and create an account and participate with relatively no effort and with ease. Not referring to, as Recon put it, the issue of "alt-armies", which I already addressed in a previous post (I believe?).

Bungie Origin lol. It would be awesome if they made their own service which supports all the platforms they're making their new IP for.

There is tru7h in that statement, but it seems to me that we are entering a new age of interconnected communications. If your not able to share and comment on what is shared, then it is seen as if your site is lacking something. Granted with b.net we are allowed to share on a local scale, but b.net has yet to allow us to share globally. If b.net will be getting an influx of new users with their next title, then b.net will needs to start thinking globally and not locally.

I'd like that. Like, a one time name change with the influx of new members. Then, when you hovered over someones name, a little text box appeared (perhaps the same color as the "Bungie is no longer managing..." box with white text) that says "Formerly known as: ________".

The only solution I would support and that makes sense to me would be to switch to a Bungie-managed service.

Since Bungie is going multi platform and because not everyone has a @hotmail.com or @live.com account, new members will have to register with their personal e-mail account. Afterwards, you would need to link your Xbox Live account and your PSN account to your Bungie ID.

Accounts made before the switch could simply register a new e-mail as their Bungie ID or keep their current e-mail as their signing-in e-mail.

Edit: Using a Facebook ID is not an option because not everyone has or wants a Facebook account. Though, linking your Bungie ID with your Facebook ID is acceptable.

I don't know if the fact that Bungie.net is based on ASP.NET limits Bungie's options on this.

Have A Nice Day!

yolo? -blam!- that! YOLTOSS!! You Only Live Twice or Some -blam!-

From various context clues picked up over the past couple of months from Achronos and Dr. Dew(that's right) I am going to assume, and accept all the dangers of assuming, that there will be a new system in place to take over WLID. Achronos' comments on not getting used to the site in it's current state coupled with mentions by a few employees that they would like to see a better stat tracking program lead me to believe this will be happening near the announcement or release of their new IP.

There are numerous references by Achronos telling everyone not to get used to the site the way it is. From titles to login process etc.

Vague reference to the request of datamining tools by Dr. Dew.

I am hoping to see a non-Windows LIVE sign in system that has the ability to link your WLID, PSN ID, and any other platform ID (perhaps Steam?) to the site. Other sites have this, such as EA, but I think Bungie would do a much, much better job connecting accounts and organizing pages to do it. (EA's site IMO is a mess, especially on the settings pages.)

Reading over more posts, I got some more ideas on how the sign in feature could be improved if it were to get a revamp. I'd love to see additional security measures taken towards alts, specifically. Perhaps there could be more steps than just [summed up] 1. sign up email 2. make an account name. It would be nice to have a Captcha text box to decrease bots, as well as required fields to fill such as name, gender, age, etc. to down the number of alts.

Can't be too careful with your company. I can feel the devil walking next to me.

I'm assuming they could also link to openIDs. This way you could in theory link to your Crimson stats(and possibly future Aerospace titles) as well. Of course the PSNID and the WLID would remain linked to the account name.

I've been more interested in how they will transition the current accounts, which are solely WLID, into multi-plat accounts. There's probably something in the ToS of WLID about account management and manipulation of the information it is linked to. It'll be interesting to see how Bungie goes forth. I'm sure Achronos and the rest of the web team have a lot on their plates with this.
