"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

https://www.bungie.net

I was reading up on some information about protecting accounts, and I tried putting in HTTPS for Bungie.net just to see if it would work. Some sites work, some don't. I was surprised that it actually loaded.

I've been fooling around with it for a few days, and the one thing I notice is that it is definitely not as fast as using the regular Bungie.net, though it is bearable.

I also noticed that being on the HTTPS version of the site and signing-in, the sign-in page (which is secure) will then take you back to the regular Bnet.

Is this officially supported by the site, or is it giving me false hope for a more secure connection?

Also, it's crazy that we can't link to HTTPS sites. Just saying <3

Hey, I'm stupid, what's HTTPS?

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I didn't know https was supported either. Though, I don't know why we'd want that secure a connection. There's nothing on the site that we can access that would require a https IMO. Its a public forum and info site after all.

Though, its interesting that it works. I wonder why.

What is HTTPS?

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (Transport Layer) Security. It just means that without some kind of user input, that webpage can't be viewed via regular links. Its a method of making a semi-secure page, for a variety of reasons.

Intresting. How will this change anything? I'm not very smart regarding this stuff.

  • 11.05.2011 9:44 PM PDT

It has allowed that for awhile. It does seem to run slower though.

What I find weird is how every once in awhile I will end up on the secure protocol....same as randomly ending up on things like seventhcolumn.bungie.net and not knowing how I got there.

Stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure. I think it provides an encryption to a network.

Why are you silly moderators always fooling around with this sites security and whatnot, one day you are gonna be meddling around and accidently divide by zero and destroy us all.

I use HTTPS for YouTube and Facebook in school.

Whenever Bungie.net is blocked, I'll be sure to use that too. ;-)

  • 11.05.2011 9:47 PM PDT

Yeah it has allowed that for ages. Nothing new in it. Eh.

Fun fact though: If a site is, by default, uses an 'https' website, if you just get rid of the 's' and link it anyways, Bungie.net will allow you to link the page AND it will automatically convert itself to https after the user clicks it. That's been pretty handy for me.

The more you know.

That has nothing to do with anything and there's no reason to post pictures. Also, it would make it look much less professional and, honestly, less of a legitimately nice looking website.

It'd adulterate it with the mundane-ness that is following the status quo.

I know. I am just acting stupid and asking for the impossible.

At best, it helps prevent passive network attacks - listening to traffic - which could theoretically* be used to hijack your session with the host. Note that this is not the same as "hack your account", at least on this site.

If you know anything about HTTP and how it works, you'll know that it's inherently insecure (it was never designed to be). HTTPS is simply a lower-level mashup of encryption technologies at layer 6 to encapsulate a HTTP message (either request or response) from layer 7. It is very much the same principle when using ESP over a VPN.

It's hard to explain how and why without flat-out explaining how to perform session hijack.

* The chance/opportunity that someone is purposefully listening for traffic and knows what to do with it is slim-to-none. So, in my opinion, it's not worth the trade-off of having a slower experience (at least on most parts of the site where it simply doesn't matter - forum pages, etc...).

It won't work. The site is made so that the BBCode only accepts things that start with "http://" as legitimate URLs.
