Subject: Why is it bad to discuss politics on bnet?

"Even in death, your Sergeant guides us home."

I find myself very intrested in politics, i don't see why we can't talk about them on community or the flood.

Probably because people get too hyped up about it.

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

It causes arguments that get way out of hand. People will fiercely defend there opinions and sometimes they just go overboard.

Key

If you want to make friends, never discuss religion or politics.

Both politics and religion are highly comparable in that both of them are positions that people have either: been influenced on since their youth and so are unlikely to change their opinion about, or, been so steadfast in their position because of how much your views on both religion and politics influence your everyday life that they're more than unlikely to ever change.

(For the most part) people don't argue about religion or politics to hear the other person's side and possibly convert their views to the adverse side depending on how convincing an argument their opponent makes. They argue to attempt to convert the opponent, and to reduce their claims about their side to naught but the ramblings of a misinformed unfortunate soul who has not seen the greatness that is THEIR side of the argument.

There is no point discussing it as people get so overly attached to their views on both religion and politics that they get almost offended when someone seems to hold the opposite opinion. As such, they defend their position from a personal standpoint and the argument devolves into nothing but insults and vulgarities; such is the norm with MOST discussions in The Flood.

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

OT: It's bad to discuss politics simply because it's a sensitive subject to most and a personal one. That being said it can turn nasty in an instant as soon as someone takes even the slightest offense to other someone's point of view on a subject that really hits home. This then turns into anger and anger into flaming and like all fire it tends to spread quickly. Blame your fellow Bungie.net users.

Or a more simple explanation is that Achronos simply wishes to keep politics and religion from these forums.

I once discussed politics in relation to Halo: Glasslands. Post WWI politics in Germany and Europe that is. I do not see why we cannot discuss them.
You obviously have not read my or the other 5 good responses so far...

Wait a minute, aren't we discussing politics?

Quick, mods, ban us!

...actually don't, I was just kidding, don't even be tempted...

Hi there! be sure to click that homepage link!

People always get into arguments and hype about the subject.

Religious threads are banned for the same reason but also for the fact people could get into racist arguments.

I lol'd and no, we aren't directly discussing politics, we are discussing threads about politics...

Ignore the inception, and it is legit.

To much flaming, and arguments get really out of hand with these types of topics.

Listen to Rush Limbaugh on talk radio. Here how fanatical he and his listeners are?

That's why you can't discuss politics - politics and religion are topics tied to emotions, so they ALWAYS degenerate into flame wars.

If one says how great Obama's health care reform is, it will bring out the Obama haters (and potentially racialists) and the debate will turn into how he's destroying the country.

If one says how Bush taking us to Iraq was a good strategic decision, it will bring out the Bush haters and the debate will turn into how his policies set up America to be destroyed.

Wanna try it out? Post something pro/anti- Obama or Bush on any newspaper site in the article comments section. Or visit the Liberty News Forum.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I believe Achronos once put it in a similar way that CrazzySnipe did above. Political and religious discussion both involve:

1) Deeply personal emotions, feelings, and opinions that are often held for life and unchangeable;

AND

2) Questions to which there is no "right" answer.

Achronos and the web team simply do not want to see threads meeting these two criteria discussed on the public forums here. Always keep in mind that this is a video game developer's website, not a general discussion community. And while some people can get to be pretty passionate about their video games, the subject matters allowed in the public forums here are generally the kind that allow this place to be a bit lighter and more family friendly than elsewhere on the web. I don't think that we always accomplish that, but prohibiting political and religious discussion goes a long way toward helping to reach that goal.

lol, you said family friendly. I thought about this thread for a while a decided that you are all right, that alot of the users are very touchy on this subect and that half of the users have the maturity of a 10 year old and would just cause alot of problems.

  • 11.06.2011 10:02 AM PDT

Political or religious discussions never end well.

I'm going to quote Cracked here:

It's that you have to recognize the huge difference between "arguing" by strongly stating your side, and simply trying to bludgeon the other person into silence with brutal slaps from your word-dick.

Article.

Meaning that "I disgaree with religious/ political beliefs" is often replaced by "Religious/ political belief is stupid and people who really believe it are idiots."

On the Internet, there's no sense of tone. It's hard to tell what someone truly means if you aren't hearing their voice. So to counteract this, people often use the harshest language they can think of to make sure that their stance is clear. And on the other side of the coin, people will often misinterpret respect as support. "I can respect that" DOES NOT mean "I agree with that", and people forget that. If I say "I respect Christian beliefs and I think that many of them are very true, but for my own personal reasons", people will read that as "I am a Christian and I think they are right". Even though that's not what I'm saying.

So, religious and political discussion is banned.

  • 11.06.2011 10:06 AM PDT

In a room filled with kings and queens some days i feel like the jester!...

plus there's never a "discussion" just a bunch of un-caged apes clamoring for each other's throats....

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

People defend their opinions, then more often than not, bash their opponents' opinions and tell them that theirs is better. Why talk about politics on a video game forum anyways?
