Subject: Why is it bad to discuss politics on bnet?

Here's a shocking hint: So is this thread. So is every bloody thread, but we generally don't lock every single thread just because it could go bad.

It's bad manners to discuss religion and politics with strangers or in public/ public forum. Since the majority will view their opinion as the only right way to think, any instigation of conversation of belief systems will turn ugly.

If you want to ask for others view points on certain subjects to gather clarity on how the populous think then that could make you grow as a person. But just talking to argue and get people to agree you are right; to win the debate is pointless.

That's not why political threads get locked. They get locked because they violate the rules. Them possibly going bad is just the general rationale for why the rule is in place. Also, yeah, most threads COULD go bad, but political and religious threads have a much higher tendency to do so (according to the web team anyway).

Hello, I'm Mr AwesomePizza. I like pizza and I'm a man. Reasoning for the name. I like to listen to the classics of music, write poetry, play video games, and much much more. I'm always down for a nice chat, so please hit me up for some conversation.

Just watch this thread
This thread is going to be a perfect example of why it's not allowed.

Ninjas: Please don't lock that thread until the 2nd page or point is proven.

EDIT: Just got locked. -_-
Look through the posts, it still proves point.
....

If your point was that a topic as overtly political bait as that is capable of perfctly reasonable discussion then sure. If that's what you're going to hold up as 'herp derp politics make people stupid and rude' then you might want to sit this one out.
That is a good enough reason why politics aren't allowed. It just shows how it can go bad, not to mention it's considered rude to discuss politics in public. Sure any topic can go bad, but all political discussion and religious discussion majority of the time goes bad. When you watch a political debate video, they're always arguing, not debating/discussing.

Just remember this:
The best way to lose friends is to discuss politics, religion, and money.
I don't who said this before, but they're right. In the business world, discussing any of the following would make you lose a customer/co-worker/partner.

Well done. They get locked because they're against the rules. I thank you for revealing this amazing truth to me, because I was entirely unaware of it. Really I am grateful.

But hey if we're banning types of threads because of the probability of them resulting in 'absolute hell', then we might as well ban close to every single game related topic ever thought of on this site, as most have a rather good probability to result in 'absolute hell'. As for topics about game skill or weapons preference, perma bans for anyone who makes such a topic because they're quite clearly the fastest way to 'absolute hell' on this site that I've ever seen.

Again, entirely the discretion of the web team. They obviously don't see it the way you're seeing it, and, with both sides having their own respective merits to their arguments, we appear to be at an impasse.

I discuss (hell even argue) politics with plenty of people from here quite often. I somehow suspect Skibur doesn't dislike me (anymore than he might otherwise) or the plenty of other folk who've at some point called his particular thoughts stupid simply because of that, he'll dislike them because they're arses to begin with. And I'm certainly not going to lose friends when largely agreeing with their worldview.

Hey look congratulations. You've managed to stumble onto the actual reason for their status: Those in charge don't want them. Perhaps in future you could give the actual reason instead of trying to come up with other reasons, especially when there is quite a lot of evidence that it can be done right.

Tubas Represent!

After a few posts, most intelligent discussion is thrown out, and the entire thread becomes a flame war of people insulting and blaming each other based on their political or religious beliefs. Plus, almost every thread made that is about a religious or political topic ends up becoming a flame war which is practically encouraging trolls and spammers.

Because it's just one of those topics, if discussed, will lead to some kind of argument. Politics and religion are such to avoid.

The people in the flood (or anywhere on the internet for that case) will take any chance they can get to flame, troll, etc. Politics and religion being a couple of the easiest targets because just like religion, people like to stand up and take a knife in the back for who they support and other like to twist the knife in the back just to see them rage. Without religion and politics this site's main forums are a better place. There are private groups, The Black Chapter being the only one that I know of, that were founded to talk about the things we can't on the mains... specifically religion and politics. Look around OP and I hope you find what you're looking for.

Given enough time political/religious threads always turn into flame wars. They may start off well enough, but things always go bad in them.

Things of that nature are better suited to other places like private groups, or off site.

But we've already got rules against flaming and trolling. Can't we just ban for flaming or trolling rather than for politics.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

It just never ends well. The arguments get way out of hand and offensive. Too often to you go from a discussion to an insult thread.

People are monkeys and they fight hard and ad hominem over politics. It's messy. It still should be allowed though, there aren't many serious forums where it's not.

The wealthy are taxed enough.52 pages, by and large a good discussion.
Bad example. That thread was about lightbulbs.
Lightbulbs are serious politics and you know it <3
I can't believe Goalie got away with that and with a thread that large. xD

Edit: To add onto my previous post in this thread, People defend their beliefs, blindly or not. Someone could be one of those extremists in their belief or side and be crazy enough to kill to defend it.

Do you know what kind of hat I'm wearing?

A party hat; you don't get one. An honor will this party be, a party in your honor, for your honor. Some of Tfear's personal guards are going to be there. You'll be introduced shortly.

Prepare to die.
