Subject: Flamethrowers In Halo Wars.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Title for Reference.

What?Why?When?How?

Why are they even there, and especially, why are they considered the main anti-infantry force in the UNSC? Why couldint Ensemble just use snipers as they did with the rebels?

I'm not complaining they are a bad force in the game, they are great... But compared to the Jackals with beam rifles... The Jackals will pick the great majority of them off before they got close enough in to use their flamethrowers. Snipers should have replaced the Flamethrowers.

Apart from gameplay, I cant really see flamethrowers acting in the middle of a battle with the Covenant. It just wouldint work for them. Being walking bombs, they are extremely dangerous to their teammates. And lets not even talk about the fact that the Covenant dont even need a direct hit on the gas tank to make it explode, letting all that napalm blow all around him... I dont know. I just see the flamethrowers in the haloverse being impractical on the battlefield, and pretty much never being used at all.

Discuss.

He's right actually, Halo Wars is not a cannon.

However, it is canon.

And flamethrowers would be good for building clearing, fighting flood, etc. They also were most likely equipped with heavier armor.

I wont deny you that, but for open battlefield fighting? I mean the UNSC did not encounter the Flood untill the events in Halo Wars, and back then they were only fighting the Covenant.

Heavier armor would seriously damage their mobility, and make them a considerably easier target to hit. I think the armor would be more of a curse than a blessing.

If their original role was taking out heavily entrenched rebels, extra armor means they can get in close without taking as much damage.

In regards to novels and "canon". I will pick and choose which ones to support as I damn well please. Cryptum and Glasslands are irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.

Don't like that? Boo hoo.

Sure they're "canon" but that doesn't mean I have to support them, their existence, or the continued careers of their respective writers.

Plus quite a few Covenant units like the Elites and Brutes tend to favor close quarters or short range combat...so I can definitely see Flamethrowers being a good asset. Torch those little bastards good.

United Armed Forces

Flamethrowers in urban combat = win.

Harvest was a broken Wreck. Ambushes everywhere, cqc. Flamethrowers? Perfect.

Not to mention torching the Flood.

I always used the flamers against hunters.

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

What most of people here said. (Flamers make sense in some cases) And about the armor being heavy, ODST's operate just fine with their suit, so that isn't really an issue IMO.

  • 11.06.2011 11:58 AM PDT

Flamethrows operate at a longer distance than you'd think. In a tight, urban environment such as Harvest's cities, they'd be invaluable. A sniper's obstructed by buildings, wreckage, cover.

Flames snake their way around everything. Incredibly effective in CQC. They don't make sense on maps like Blood Gulch, but canonically speaking they suit the purpose the SoF was originally supposed to play; the liberation of Harvest.

I am a Halo Pro. I am in a group called the Ninja Academy. It is a very good group and if you are reading this, you should join.

I use the flamethrower against hunters. It kills them really fast.

They come now... and they take us... the tide rises.

Considering the locations of many human-covenant clashes where they are involved, the UNSC Flamethrower are used in close quarters battles. They dont need high speed or high mobility. They are used to stop covenant infantry awaiting the arrival of main UNSC foot soldiers like Marines or ODST or vehicles like Warthogs and Scorpions etc...

Well....HW is not cannon.

It is in terms of story, it isn't in terms of mechanics and gameplay.

That's because burning people to death with napalm is "inhumane" or something.

Turns out that the US refused to sign anything barring it's use, but there has been a lot of public back lash. (What I've just found out in 10 minutes of research.)

Some random quote from wikipedia about napalm:

"We sure are pleased with those backroom boys at Dow. The original product wasnt so hot if the -blam!-s were quick they could scrape it off. So the boys started adding polystyrene now it sticks like -blam!- to a blanket. But if the -blam!-s jumped under water it stopped burning, so they started adding Willie Peter (white phosphorus) so to make it burn better. And just one drop is enough, itll keep on burning right down to the bone so they die anyway from phosphorus poisoning."

I can't imagine why it's frowned upon.

Not only napalm.
In the Pacific front during the II World War, US Marines had used flamethrowers for destroy many Japanese bunkers. US Marine corp had a special Sherman tank equipped with flamethrowers for specifical roles in battlefield (assault and destruction of a fortification of enemy islands in this case).

Rifles would be better in open combat against the Covenant. I would definitely want flamethrowers against the Flood.

Walk softly, and carry a big midget.

They wanted to make them different from the Jackals. The Snipers would be pretty much the same thing.

  • 11.06.2011 7:38 PM PDT

The Flamethrowers are essential when someone tries to rush their leader to your base. However, in the middle of the battle, they aren't really that useful.

Have to agree on the part about gameplay. Flamer's are nearly useless unless the enemy has no jackals, and even then, in order to be useful you need to have large amounts of them, which leaves you open to get steamrolled by vehicles.

Also, flamers are ridiculously useless against the almighty broken ODSTs.
