Well, I'm a old pro so to speak at Halo multiplayer. I'll give you a brief rundown of what I know. First off learn what your core weapons are and what weapons work well for what situation. For me I'm always carring the sniper rifle with the shotgun or AR. I hardly use the pistol. I feel it has no skill involved with it. Just my opinion. After you learned (and I say practice shooting with your weapons at Spartans in multplayer while moving standing still, I do this for sniper practice) how to kill at a sufficent rate, learn the levels a little bit. Like where is a good place to hide, where can I get health quickly, what areas might my enemies take most offen. Then after that play Lan/Xbox Connnect with your friends. Learn how they play and attack and take what they did to you and apply it to your field of play. Oh, and another thing. Remember, in Halo cover can be just as good as guns blazing. Me, being a sniper, I have learned that waiting for a shot is as important as killing all the other team. Example: One time during a tournament 1 flag (3 min.) 3 captures CTF game at a Game Station in Mt. Vernon, IL I let my team go off and try to get the others flag. To say the least I didn't shoot that round but later (as in 6 mins later) I made one shot mind you to save the game when their player was driving off with the flag. So, for summary learn what your good at, learn the level play, and take what punishment you may get from your friends adapt and become a better player.
Pro, eh? Well then you would use the pistol if you were. The pistol is the most cheap/powerful weapon in the game. Use it to your advantage. Tell you what, next time I go visit my grandparents (they live in Irvington, IL), I'll go to Mt.Vernon and play some Halo with you. I haven't known any good player that hasn't used the pistol.
Yes you need to use the pistol. Try to play on XBC too.
