Subject: So we can make political threads as long as they dont turn into flame

"Even in death, your Sergeant guides us home."

So we can make political threads as long as they dont turn into flame wars? There was one on the flood yesterday and I'm suprised at how well matured they were about the topic, there were also no flame wars. The thread didn't get locked, so is it ok as long as it's not biased or causing any flame wars?

According to what I saw on several threads, yes. As long as it isn't too directly political or doesn't turn insane.

Probably so. I don't know much about politics since I most of the times don't care. Pending Recon for President '12!

If you make a political thread you can get banned. I imagine that whatever ninja saw the thread decided to give it a pass, but I wouldn't make one if I were you.

Politics is a very delicate subject. If it doesn't turn nasty though, I don't see why it shouldn't be on the off-topic forum.

That's a big if, though.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Straight from the rules. It doesn't specify if the thread is civil or not, it just says prohibited. I wouldn't make a political thread just to be safe, any that you see that aren't locked maybe slipped past the moderators or the moderator didn't find it necessary to lock. Moderators have different interpretations of the rules.

Exactly. The rules are not circumstantial. Political and religious discussion are prohibited, end of story. The rule is not difficult to interpret.

I've seen many threads in which moderators permitted political discussion, and may have even seen one in which a moderator acknowledged it.

They're actually completely circumstantial most of the time...

I don't think so, dude. A thread remaining unlocked is not necessarily the result of a moderator "permitting" political discussion. Threads that constitute or necessitate political discussion are routinely locked.

I don't know whether a Forum Ninja has ever "acknowledged" that a thread was political discussion without locking the thread, but I can tell you that if I had seen something like that, I would have locked it regardless of whether another moderator posted in it or not.

Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

If I see it, It's getting locked. The OP will at least receive a warning and anyone who decides to harass other members in the thread will likely catch a ban.

I don't care what the circumstances behind the thread are. This is one of the areas where the grey area is pretty small. If it's political, don't post it.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I remember the osama thread when he was killed.

That was political and created by Qbix.

I think sometimes there will be political threads if something of political/world significance occurs.

No. Every rule is enforced as it is written regardless of the circumstances.

We run across this issue a lot and it somewhat boggles my mind how often I have to explain it. Someone will evade the profanity filter and when they are warned/banned, message me saying "but I had to because of the subject matter we were discussing." Nope. The rule against profanity filter evasion applies regardless of circumstances. Same with the other rules. It's not okay to post off-topic if the thread is "really important." It's not okay to post spam if it's funny. It's not okay to flame or harass other members if they deserve it.

Not sure where you think any of our rules say "this rule may not apply depending on the circumstances," but if you think any of them do, please enlighten.

No it wasn't. It was a thread discussing a current event that had nothing to do with politics. I remember banning users from that thread for trying to turn it into a political discussion. But it was most certainly not a political discussion in and of itself.

I am very surprised on how many people are talking about political threads.

So far, counting this one, I've seen 3 this week already.

The rules do not apply to moderators.

The rules are not enforced "as is". Different moderators enforce the rules differently.

Along the lines of that one thread that said "Moderators are not of a hive mind", but most seem to say that they lock political threads. But what I think is more relevant, is what is considered political.

Me too. There have also been a-lot of threads about the OWS stuff that is going on. I can't say I haven't contributed, but I've tried to not make it political. Hopefully saying the words Congress, President, and talking about socioeconomic issues in that context isn't considered political.

It seems to be a dark grey area to me. (I should note I try to avoid it, but I like to state my opinion sometimes).

The rules do not apply to moderators.
That's a ridiculous statement. One of our Master Forum Ninjas just banned himself for 7 days after it was pointed out that he had violated a rule. And that happened only two months ago.

What do you think would happen if a moderator started spamming links to shock sites or otherwise blatantly violating forum rules? Everyone would just stand by and watch it happen?

If you're talking about whether one forum ninja will lock/warn/ban another's "gray area" post, that's completely irrelevant to the subject at hand. Not that this stops some people from bringing it up at every opportunity...

The rules are not enforced "as is". Different moderators enforce the rules differently.
The way the rules are interpreted and enforced has absolutely no bearing on whether or not any of our rules "do not apply under certain circumstances." Of course they are enforced "as is," but in some gray areas, one moderator might interpret the rule -- or the post -- differently than another. Sorry, but... deal with it.
