What kind of broadband are we talking about– DSL, Cable, etc?
I know cable is usually a shared line– everyone in your area shares a line, the more people on, the slower it goes. I don't know if DSL is ever set up that way, but I don't think so.
Also, both DSL and cable have varying upstream and downstream speeds. I almost switched to cable because the downstream speed was way more than my DSL, but the upstream speed was less, so I didn't switch. The broadband providers assume that you'll be downloading more then uploading, so their connections are often asymetrical.
If you change providers, check both up and downstream speeds.
