Subject: What were the restrictions for new users?

The beta is super awesome. RogueAssassin27 is now the person who got my Totodile's nickname. Hoo-hah! Relevant.inb4lock

I would like to find out so I can see if we can improve it in some way so that it is easier for new members to join the community.

Hello, I'm Mr AwesomePizza. I like pizza and I'm a man. Reasoning for the name. I like to listen to the classics of music, write poetry, play video games, and much much more. I'm always down for a nice chat, so please hit me up for some conversation.

You can not make a thread within 24 hours of joining.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

what do you mean by restrictions? Like the spam filter which doesn't allow a user to create a thread until they are 24 hours old?

Or, email and name type restrictions?

  • 11.07.2011 7:39 PM PDT

We miss you Logan.
Ask any question. I'll help with anything on site or off.

I think there one were you can't make a group inless your account is 14 days old.

What do you guys think of the restrictions? Do you think they are necessary? Do they help the newcomers or does it confuse them?

I need answers, Parker!

There aren't any restrictions on posting, right?

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

I think they are fine the way they are and I fear that if the 24 hour restrictions were removed people would create (more?) one-time-use alts.

What's the problem with more alts, Tom?

Well, we know for a fact that people can, have, and likely will spam with new accounts if they're allowed to create threads the second they sign up. The filter makes some people a bit less likely to do so, so its clearly working.

Isn't the fact you have make a new WLID already a filter in a sense?

"Living to smile, and not to succeed; smiling to inspire happiness, not to give the illusion you are happy; creativity and music to inspire smiling, which in turn inspires happiness; being nice to be happy, not for being perceived a good person."

We should make to where they can't post for a week!
That'll show those n00bz.

No. It's exceedingly easy to do this.

The more the merrier. I personally don't think we have enough counter-spam tools to prevent the spam before it happens.

A week of no posting would do new members good. Learn the ropes before they can incorrectly implement things they've misinterpreted from said "ropes" after less than an hour of being on this forum.

After a week of lurking, you can be a much better member than most people who have been posting since minute #1.

I actually disagree with that. If people can't jump in and enjoy posting here from the get go, they probably won't stick around long enough to do so. I'd rather we continued to let people post when they get here.

Though, I understand what you and the others above you meant by that. Its another filter, which I've vaguely advocated. I was thinking more along the lines of tightening up how easy it is to make accounts. WLIDs are way to easy to make a bunch of and spam with.

They can still post, correct? And what of they get discouraged by the restriction, leave, and come back after the one week with no experience? They are lost.

I thought you had to put your contact info, alternate e-mail, and all that info so it would take at least 10 minutes to make?

Understandable, I still think a week of learning the ropes without blindly posting without knowing "how to forums" would do 'em good. Maybe I'm just thinking in the moment. Oh well. It won't get implemented anyway.

Can Bungie make it harder to make WLID's? Is it within their powers?

I only know of two: A new user may not create a new thread until their profile is 24 hours old, and you cannot create a new Private Group until 14 days after your join-date.

I never understood the restriction on making private groups. I mean it's not like you're spamming the mains.

  • 11.08.2011 7:18 AM PDT

I say creating more restrictions would help. For instance you can only post ten times a day for the first 10 days your account is activated.

  • 11.08.2011 9:10 AM PDT

What a hipster.

For a while now I've been a supporter of the idea that all new accounts should get a PM from the Soul stating Forum Rules. Either the user looks at the message or they are stuck with annoying "1" for rest of eternity.

A slight ‘’incident’’ has occurred in the forum. Me and Random have both been banned by myself. Which is annoying? Hopefully this is fixable? PLZ? Random is becoming angry.

Agreed!
Anyway, I think the restrictions are good how they are. The 14 day group creation is there to stop people taking all of the names with new accounts (I presume). Also the thread creation rule isn't to radical but it gets the job done.
