There is a problem on this forum with people's definition of what a "dead" game is. This past weekend, CET, there were about 75,000 people online. Although this is a lot less than the population of some other major games, and a lot less than Reach's early population figures, it's still shows that there is, at any one time, MORE than enough people to be able to find a game. 75k is more than the capacity of a football stadium; if you can get 75k people to do ANY activity at any one time, that activity would be described as popular.
In contrast, back the days of the original xbox I used to play Doom 3 online, and even at peak times that game probably didn't have a population of even 100. It would often be the same people hosting games, and the same people joining those games. Yet it didn't matter - you played it, enjoyed it. I never heard anyone saying the game was dead, even though by today's standards it was a ghost-town of a game.
Basically, the devoted fans will keep playing no matter what other games are out.
