Walk by faith. Dude. Not by sight.

I think his thread was "This is depressing."

Even on console Halo was never the first FPS. The first FPS dates pretty far back yet.

All these are bound to change over time obviously.

Halo launched with the Xbox back in 2001. I'm very certain it is.
I believe it was noted as the first successful FPS on the xbox console.

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

Halo 3 = CoD 4.

Reach < Black Ops < MW2

I dunno about MW3. No opinion on it yet.

From seeing gameplay videos of MW3 it just looks like MW2 with better graphics. I mean come on basically the same weapons, same HUD, and the same HUD for Preditors and AC-130's. More like MW2.5 to me. It may be just infinity ward.

It might have some differences considering this IW is a completely new one than the one that did MW2.

Yeah, like I said I'm judging from what I saw. It looked pretty similar. I didn't plan on buying it anyway so it could be really different.

Halo 3>Modern Warfare 3>Reach

  • 11.08.2011 1:39 PM PDT

Well let's see. We had Halo in 2001. COD was released in 2003. It wasn't that big a deal. Halo 2 came out. Big deal. COD2 came out. Very successful, but nowhere near Halo in popularity. So very few people played COD.

COD3 came out. Even COD fans will admit that game was just utter failure. Halo 3 came out. Again, dominated with few to no competitors, and no serious ones. It beat Modern Warfare.

Only then, after 8 years of people shunning COD to play Halo, have people switched to COD. It's because they're tired of Halo and want a change. COD has been around for a shorter time, but that isn't why it's "winning." It is "winning" because nobody ever played it up until recently (relatively) while those folks have been playing Halo for a decade. Very few people want the same game (not to imply Halo games haven't had massive changes between them all) for a decade.

So no, I wouldn't say COD is "winning." I would just say that people got tired of Halo because Halo had no real competitors for around 8 years. Maybe after this break Halo will come back. We'll see.

Welcome to the internet. Joy dies here.

I think the difference is the fantasy factor. Halo is a sci-fi story, full of aliens and bright colors. It's a good environment for gaming, but it doesn't make you look cool at school.

CoD is more marketable to the kids that are competing with each other for social standing. Kids want to seem as tough and mature as possible and a game about realistic(ish) warfare is a more mature concept than red vs. blue.

It doesn't matter what the actual skill level involved is - they don't have the experience to recognize better gameplay hiding behind less serious graphics. They just see fatigues and real world gun models and think about how cool they would be if they fought in a war. Same reason kids all want to dress up like gangsters and pretend they had difficult childhoods.
Violence and aggression sell well to teenage boys.

Cannot tell you how true this is. That and the sci-fi era has faded in favor of the more modern era

  • 11.08.2011 1:56 PM PDT

Why are you here?

In terms of popularity, I think since MW2 came out, CoD has been beating Halo.

  • 11.08.2011 2:08 PM PDT

No point to it, when you think about it.

Huh. I can't find the "I'd rather slam my hands in a car door than play COD" Option in the poll. Weird.

NON-TROLLING: No.
