Subject: The Evolution of a Genre and What It Means for Bungie

On a scale of one to ten (while also providing an explanation), how likely do you think it is that Destiny will be a shooter (of sorts)? Now, this isn't just another "what genre do you think Destiny will be?" thread. I'm talking about just the possibility of it being a shooter.

With the releases of Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 recently (one more so than the other), the standards set for the shooter genre are going up ten fold. This is from a marketing perspective, a quality perspective, a graphics perspective, a sales perspective, a multiplayer perspective, and every perspective in between. Whether or not you're a fan of the aforementioned games, you have to admit that, for better or worse, they're quickly evolving the genre. This new shooter market is getting harder and harde to become recognized in, unless a game is a continuation on a franchise or has some sort of stepping stone into the market (being a launch title for a new system for example).

So, do you think that, despite these new developments in the world and market of First Person Shooters, Bungie is going to use their experience as an FPS developer and throw their hat into the metaphorical ring for contention? Or, do you think they'll take the safer (and possibly more successful, depending) route and go off into a less contested genre?

I think it's a 50 50 chance. They have major experience making first person shooters, but it sounds like they are really interested in anything but.

I have some trust in Bungie. Yes basically all of their are first-person shooters but there is three games that aren't a FPS(four if you include Desert Strike). I think they will go for a RPG game then a FPS. But I may be VERY wrong.

I understand nothing because my life is a conspiracy.

Bungie has made shooter games since 1993, but it is not going to be like BF3 or MW3, it is going to be something new, like how Halo was.

What a hipster.

My money's on a FPS RPG. Bungie is a genius when it comes to concocting First Person Shooters; and with a little Mass Effect style background to it, I'm sure their talents wont be wasted.

I know this sounds like a big shout, but I'm expecting Bungie's next project to be as revolutionary as the Halo series was, just in a different way. And yes, I think it will be a shooter, just not like anything we've seen yet.

Best of random chance

The claim that it's an MMORPG has been disregarded by bungie, but I think that would rock. And what competitors would they have? I haven't seen a single MMORPG for console that was relatively successful.

I think that is going to be extremely tough. Halo resulted in many, many people (young and old) to get into gaming.

But who knows? If this provides something different per sei, then anything is possible.

I believe it will be first person shooter of the likes we have not seen before. Bungie blazes new trails wit their games and I think the next will be just as revolutionary.

TBH I think it will be something we can't even conceive of in a console game. I know, pretty damn vague but we're all guessing.

Whoo.

I think they'll go into the genre they want to build a game for and not get bogged down by "what popular" and "what's not".

The first person shooter genre hasn't evolved too much recently in my opinion. The only real standards I tend to noticed are the increasing visual quality, which to me doesn't matter.

I'm not going to scale the likelihood Destiny is a shooter because I have literally no information on it. As with every genre, there is more to a game than the level of its competition.

I'll have the roast duck . . . with the mango salsa.

There is a 100% chance that this new game will be a hybrid of all major genres. Just like everything else these days. It will be a shooter for 1st person parts on foot, a third person land/space/water vehicle pilot sim for battle/racing/escort missions, part RPG so we can distribute points in trees, RTS aspects so we can set up our bases/spacestations/motherships as we see fit, weapon mods!!! Wind Turbine/renewable energy mods!!! Side scrolling mini games!!!

It has a 100% chance of being the best thing ever.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

If this is the idea and project the Jones has spent years considering, thinking about, developing, tinkering, etc.....?

Just as Halo made console shooters acceptable, and Halo 2 made automated matchmaking commonplace and Halo 3 made stat micromanagement into an RPG-like element for shooters.... and so on....

I think that this thing (whatever it may be) could be aiming at breaking a mold or two, or shattering some preconceptions as to what defines and limits any particular gaming genre.

Seriously. If this is what Jones and others have been plotting about for all of these years, there is a very real reason for the darkness and something very game changing (pun intended) coming when they do announce.

That's just speculation, I know not one thing at all, except history. The term "paradigm shift" gets overused, abused and spoken too much, but I am thinking that it could be one here.

I honestly hope it's not a first person shooter.

There aren't enough great third-person games yet!

Yeah, something big is coming.
I mean Halo Wars wasn't even developed by Bungie and it's still the best console RTS on the market.
/opinion, but you have to admit, no other RTS works on consoles quite as well.

You see, therein lies the problem. I honestly think that Bungie could make a GOOD FPS with their new IP, however, Bungie is a company first and a developer of "good" games second. They need to cater (at least a little) to the masses. Things that are good, but don't have a hint of mainstream in then often get pushed to the Wayside.

So the question would be, can they easily marry the two in a constantly evolving genre that could very well be something totally different by the time they even announce the game?

Don't -blam!- with Kerser!

I have come to think the game will be an open world RPG. Possibly similar to Grand Theft Auto.
