Subject: What was the point of making Reach all gritty?

Hi.

It's so boring. Halo stood out with its contrasting, bright colors and sleek visuals.

The gaming industry is not in some dire need for boring, generic, and gritty graphic styles. In fact, the epitome of a housing of such styles was very recently released.

Thoughts?

They wanted a darker, scarier tone. I thought it was a fine idea considering what reach is about.

...That said, in retrospect I think I would have preferred the old art style.

The beta felt darker, but the actual game is meh.

Because Reach is supposed to be a desperate, planet-is-falling game. The other games were mostly about being a badass(except for ODST, which IMO actually captured the "desperate" part really well).

Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo 3 ODST > Halo Reach > Halo CE

Based on campaigns.

Becuase reach is a piece of crap that deserves to die in a hole thats why

I liked the 1930's-esque OST & detective work, not to mention the settings.

ME2 was overly-bland in places, and it doesn't have Halo's exaggerated proportions.

Keyword: Graphics. Some areas in ME2 were a bit bland, but the engine that rendered them was great.

I was amazed at how similar the two are lol; subdued greens, greys, snow & a planet that suspiciously looks like Reach.

The texture quality, Anti-aliasing & graphical detail are much higher.

Halo 3 has more cube maps and more contrast

The Reach concept art was better than Reach's final graphics. There are limitations to an engine, but none for an artist.

Except there weren't four other sleek and bright Saving Private Ryan's before it.

ODST showed that you don't need to make the colors gritty and ugly to make a game feel dark and damp.
