I just don't like how there is a grey area on where the mods can ban.

It should be clean cut, if you break the rules then you are banned. Not left for interpretation by moderator.
Really? How do you make off topic threads clear cut? How do you make political threads clear cut? How do you make ad hominem offenses (being a jackass) clear cut? Once you call someone a dick, it's a ban?

If it is in the rules its a ban.
If not, then no ban.

Easy as that

Everything I asked about is a rule. Tell me how you make them clear cut and objective.

No ad hominems, that's just childish. Call names and get into a piss fight? Ban. Take away the politic threads or just ban them on sight. Off topics belong in the Flood, if they are put anywhere else then ban.

My Best Bungie moment: finally beating all the Halo games on solo legendary.
My Worst Bungie moment: not seeing giant stuffie grunts in the Bungie store.

Nope. They ban people for not following rules. I have followed the rules, had fun, and never had a problem. The mods here are good.

First, I'd like to thank you for the response. Second, who's to say when ad hominem becomes ad hominem ENOUGH for a ban. "You suck at sniping" is leaps and bounds behind "Your mother's a whore and you wear women's clothing."

Also, there is still a gray area in what is and is not a topic of discussion allowed in the Septagon. Discussing the community is a broad stroke to paint when making rules and regulations. And, as expected, the enforcement of locking off topic things is equally broad and varied in result and reason.

Finally, you didn't comment on how we can tell, definitively, if something is a political/religious thread. Please and thank you.

Alright, maybe that should be left up to debate, but that is the only thing.

Also, there is still a gray area in what is and is not a topic of discussion allowed in the Septagon. Discussing the community is a broad stroke to paint when making rules and regulations. Read the rules, if it is a gray area then lock the thread. If it is something you KNOW shouldn't be there should be a 7-day

Finally, you didn't comment on how we can tell, definitively, if something is a political/religious thread. Please and thank you.

I don't honestly know how you can't tell if a thread is about politics/religion because usually it says it in the title. If it is a thread that got derailed and turned into a flame war of religion/politics then ban those who started and participated in it.

Basically what they do now, but a little more clean cut would be nice.

Yeah that is a bit simplistic Champ. I'm naturally pretty black and white, as I prefer looking at the world through that filter. Some things here though just aren't that easy. Some of it requires some interpretation to get to a rational conclusion. That goes both ways.

If I see a thread about philosophy, and it mentions some kind of religious source, I have to look at it and decide if its more about religion, or philosophy. If someone talks about economic systems, and someone mentions politicians, I have to think about it, and deduce its connotation. Are they mentioning politicians simply as an example of esoteric policy? Are they crossing the political line? A black and white interpretation might give me the answer, but its usually not as well realized as it is when I put some thought into it.

What is the cut off for flaming? Someone calling someone else an idiot? Someone calling someone ignorant? Ignorant isn't always an obvious pejorative. It usually depends on context, and intent. Its sometimes difficult to get context and content without putting some personal application to it.

So, while I at least always try to look at it from a violating the rules or not violating the rules perspective, sometimes its just not that simple. Sometimes it requires some extra contemplation.

Sometimes.

Most of the time, it is black and white. A user breaks the rules, and depending on the severity of the violation, and their warning/ban history, you dole out what is appropriate.

Its not always so simple unfortunately. Some people know how to skate the line, so you have to extrapolate some connotation out from what they're doing.

Like a Troll (not all trolls are bad) who makes a topic about why grape jelly is better than strawberry, for a bunch of intentionally inane reasons. It seems so obvious, yet innocuous, that at a glimpse you don't know what to do. Should you let it go on as no rules have really been specifically violated? Should you wait for some people to post in it it gauge their reaction and compare it to the OP? Should you let nature take it course and let the community decide if it should be discussed, or fall of the front page into oblivion? For me, it would depend on a lot of variables. That's why its not so clear cut all of the time.

Ahhh, I can see the OP now.. "Grape jelly > Strawberry jelly because Joe Paterno eats strawberry jelly and he's a -blam!-. Discuss."

Seriously though, I can really respect you for being able to read betweenthe lines in certain situations that may not be directly and specifically violating a rule (as the rule is, verbatim). You must get massive amounts of hate mail of people sending you essays about how, technically, their thread about Obama wasn't political (for example).

Though I do agree with snipechamp. While not knowing how to do so, I think the rules could go with some added objective elements.

I asked Achronos about this once, after I was banned. I made a joke in a thread using numbers as letters. I got banned for spamming. Achronos said that intent is completely irrelevant.

Well, this is one area where the rule is very clear. If you insult a person who posts, rather than their actual post, it's flaming.

I don't think must people here have used enough forums or other mediums of web services to understand generally how lucky they actually are. Appeals process? That's practically revolutionary when it comes to forums and most places are one infraction you're out of the door.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

At times, yes.

Recon's recent perma-spree on anybody who so much as "confessed" to illegally pirating content was rather surprising.

Harsh banning? On B.net?

There may be the odd incident, but in general B.net is pretty lax.
This.

Head on over to Halo Waypoint Forums and attempt to get into a debate with those crazies. You'll get banned for an "improper" tone. It's downright laughable.
