Has anyone been warned/banned for threads on lumpy pudding?
You agree not to use Bungie Web Sites to publish, post, distribute, or disseminate defamatory, infringing, obscene, or other unlawful material or discussion. This includes, but is not limited to... lumpy pudding (if its not illegal, it should be)...

I think you're confusing poor morals with a high tolerance for gore. I see what you're getting at, but my point is this: killing is killing, just as theft is theft. Doesn't matter how clean, easy, or hard to see it is.
Possibly. Maybe I was thinking of class instead. The type of person that would shoplift is likely to be a bit scummy whereas the only prerequisite for pirating is being internet savvy.

Although that just might be me stereotyping.

Posted by: True UnderdogI still feel like it's unfair. I bet there are tonnes of situations where somebody could post about how they broke the law once and they wouldn't receive such a harsh punishment for it. (Stealing candy bars, littering, underage drinking, illicit drugs, etc.) I highly doubt people are permanently banned for such small things.

Piracy, on the other hand, seems to hit a sore spot as far as (some) of the mods' tolerance for law-breaking goes.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that the only posts that should receive permanent bans (ignoring ban history) are people who link shock or phishing sites. (Or if somebody goes on a massive spam spree)

You can still crack down on the pirates without going overboard. A month would teach them a lesson good enough and you can permanently ban them if they do it again. (If you so desire)

Or is this just because of the classic question of pirates vs. ninjas?

It's not unfair; it's perfectly fair because it's administered evenly. It's just pants-on-head retarded. It's not disruptive, so why resort to a permanent ban? Is a one-off case of expressing one's abstract views really so abhorrent that it requires the user to be permanently removed?

Removing users should be an absolute last resort, in cases of consistent and deliberate disruption, not in cases that would, in any other circumstance, be the most minor of infractions. Would you permanently ban someone for extolling their wish that -blam!- be tortured? Would you permanently ban someone for talking about their desire to see narcotics legalised? Would you permanently ban someone for linking to a youtube video containing unlicensed content?

Of course you wouldn't. The views being expressed in this thread are utterly irrational.

I'd actually go as far to say that the fact that we have them at all goes to show the kinder, gentler approach to moderating that the mod staff has taken since the days of olde.
lol. A warning of olde was a post or PM telling you stop being an arse.

So far, with the remarks evilcam has made are pretty interesting...
Anyway, I think most mods are not harsh. It really depends on how hard they need/want to enforce the rules of the forum.

Right around here is when you'd start referring to the moderating team as 'your mum'.
It isn't their place to teach you a lesson on the virtue of morals just like it isn't mine to school you on the sin that is Hersheys.
I might feel strongly about it, but in the end it isn't any of my business.

Oh, I don't believe that their bans are going to effect how much the users illegally download content one bit. In fact, it might make them worse even. They could get spiteful at Bungie and pirate their games instead of buying them or something (doubt it).

The lesson I was referring to was "Don't post about pirating stuff here, the ninjas will ban you for it." Nothing to do with morals at all.

I'd agree if people weren't getting banned due to a Ninja's moral standpoint.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I'm naturally pretty black and white, as I prefer looking at the world through that filter.
Would you call that a... polarizing filter?

OT: I've never found it difficult to follow the rules here. Most people who complain about the moderation either seem to have trouble posting without deriding others... or just enjoy a good hearty debate. Some people push the envelope, but I've seen enough people do that regularly for years that it's hard to believe the mods here could truly be "harsh". Others just can't seem to learn, and those people have trouble becoming useful members of the community anyways. There might be an occasional hiccup in enforcement, but until someone gets shot in the face with a beanbag we'll probably be fine.

Edit: For example,

The fact that your account still exists is a testament to the fact that the moderation here is more forgiving in the long run than many sites, don't you think elm?

I was avoiding the piracy issue since I thought it was being discussed enough, but I will say that I think a permanent ban for just mentioning that you have engaged in it in the past is a bit much. Surely a 14 day ban would get the point across handily, no? But people who discuss it need to watch more procedural cop shows: you always talk in the hypothetical when discussing something that's clearly against the rules.

No, I think its pretty fair.

  • 11.12.2011 3:59 AM PDT

I don't think so. I had said someone at this one community competition was an idiot for not talking with the team and running off on the forums. What happened? The post got edited out.

Though you can be warned/ban for flaming here, you are more or less treated maturely so I probably would have been let off.

I remember when I got permabanned from a website for attempting to get first comment on an article and I had no warnings or previous bans. The moderation here is not bad at all compared to other forums/websites.

That's funny, because according to people with "higher" titles, we treat them unfairly.

Edit: I'd say we're pretty fair; can't make everyone happy, especially when it's someone you're temporarily removing from the forums.
