Why is it that any thread (or post) can technically break any one of the forum rules, but terrible threads (such as the ones that usually make up this forum) are allowed to stay open, while the occasional gem is locked for often the most trivial of reasons?

It's a shame that the value of a thread seems to be determined not by its contents, but by its adherence to the rules.

The beta is super awesome. RogueAssassin27 is now the person who got my Totodile's nickname. Hoo-hah! Relevant.inb4lock

I don't exactly understand what you mean, do you have an example perhaps?

When I grow up I want to be bitter and spiteful.

"i liked the reality where everything was on fire better"
-legato on remedial chaos theory

Gems must be locked away to prevent them from eventually decomposing to the latter terrible state.

As you're fairly new I don't expect you to be able to relate to the first part of my post.

However, do you have an opinion you'd like to share on the second part?

The second part being that "All threads are created equal under the rules" when instead (in my opinion) threads should be judged based on their value to the community, irrespective of the rules.
(n.b. I'm talking about the forum rules/CoC, not the ToU)

I wouldn't mind seeing some examples of threads you consider to be valuable to the community.

The rules in this forum are same as any other section of this site. If a thread breaks the rules it is promptly locked, no exceptions. The Septagon doesn't get any special treatment as far as I can tell, it just has more moderator overlook because it is geared more towards issues regarding the site itself. In the end its all up to the moderator who is viewing the forum at the time, they decide which threads are quality and are geared towards the forum it was posted in and which do not belong.

It is possible for members to make quality threads with a somewhat large amount of discussion value and still abide by the rules. Honestly the only threads I ever see being locked here are simple questions that are answered after one or two posts, flame wars, threads that have run their course discussion value wise and halo related threads(which 343 now looks after, I shouldn't even have to mention that).

So once again, I just don't see the problem here.

As would I. You also seem to forget that moderators are individuals, some of them may deem a thread against the rules judged upon their own decision, where some may think there is still a good reason to keep a thread open.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Becuase terrible threads aren't against the rules.

Also bad and good threads are often too opinionated by mods/users.

A thread someone makes may be liked by some, hated by others.

My advice TO EVERYONE, if you don't like a thread, DON'T POST IN IT!!!

Also, can't people like ignore a thread they don't like? It nmakes things A LOT simpler.

It's easy to ignore a thread I don't like. It's much harder to participate in a thread I do like, for fear of being warned, banned or locked out.

Here's a hypothetical example of a page in the Flood:

24 threads, less than 50 replies each, mundane discussion (cats, ponies, what I had for dinner, some thing I saw, my thought of the day, hating on a game, hating on some genre of music, film, tv etc), not locked.

One thread, over 150 replies, semi political/religious/controversial/interesting/meaningful discussion, locked.

1. It's the Flood, boring threads like that are Off-Topic. (Which is acceptable, I think)
2. Political and Religious are usually locked, the rest, well, maybe those threads get derailed by some jack-asses?

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

New Flood

Posting a -blam!- thread should be against the rules.

Someone ban skib, he's violated this new rule.

The interesting thing about "quality" is that it's pretty subjective.

Adherance to the rules is substantially less so.

You'll be hard pressed to find many people who see quality in a turd.

The mods are inconsistent enough as it is. (Sick of me saying this? Well... pucker up.)

Letting then determine which threads are "gems" or not would result in a massive cluster-blam!-. Not to mention the dozens of threads we would get here, all called "Why isn't my thread allowed to stay open?? His thread was."

Well it's the way people interpret things. Everyone perceives things differently. If you can't understand that, I can't help you.

If this is the state of my art, then I secede.

All thread interest is subjective. If you don't like a thread, that doesn't mean someone else can't express interest. Yes, the reason some threads get locked are extremely trivial, but there's no reason to lock a thread for being "stupid". If that was allowed, or practiced, this place would be in shambles.

Its all about the subject and the biased moderation. If the threads an attention getter or ego booster for a ninja or staff member it stays regardless of its content. If its a thread that may have some heated debate and controversy it usually gets locked faster even if the content is within the rules.
