Subject: Threads

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

If you guys post the colours you'd like me to make your views I'll compile them all into an e collage. How cool is that?

If its in the shape of an American flag i bet you get banned.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I tend to agree. I'd like to see the ruling on more relaxed on more controversial topics, some get pretty interesting.

But Top Gun, that bump was clearly detrimental the community. It's a shame that the bumper wasn't permanently banned and his spam deleted!

I guess the way I see it is we all want moderation on these forums, and a best-fit line is the easiest one to draw.

When a thread gets locked because of a negative post, it might make sense to just delete the offending post, but, as the old saying goes, "you can't unring a bell." There is no way to ensure that a thread with posts that violate the rules won't just instantly become a moderation nightmare.

Everyone understands he knows the rules and can answer his own question right? Right?

Anyway, I think it's best to close a topic with thoughtful discussion before it turns into a derailed flamefest.

"Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. The "gems" are locked to keep them that way, or if the question was answered.

I'm not sure what you mean by "terrible threads".

I think this forum gets a little more leeway given the ratio of mature to immature members is higher here. Plus, this is a gathering place for the community, so naturally some topics will be allowed that aren't in the other forums (such as the beard thread). Even though they are about specific users and break the rules, it's a "community" topic, so it fits here.

IMO.

I agree, threads need to be judged by merit rather than adherence to the rule (or a double standard). I'll use Thread A and B as an example. Thread A has little use to B.net and OP has bumped several times, even some consecutively. Thread B is actually cool, with time, effort, and money put into its making. OP 'bumps' Thread B with a single post detailing a new improvement with more than a single sentence or phrase. Thread A is open and OP has not been reprimanded. Thread B is locked and its OP reprimanded.

EDIT: Additionally, 'fun' threads can't be judged on merit, only on their following the rules (to a degree). My original comment applies to things meant or perceived as semi-serious.

I'm surprised that thread was locked just because of a bump that gave new information about a community project that was actually enjoyed by a lot of people.

Where as threads that are bumped mercilessly with no real updates, I won't name any names, are allowed to be open even if there content is borderline against the rules.

Why is it that any thread (or post) can technically break any one of the forum rules, but terrible threads (such as the ones that usually make up this forum) are allowed to stay open, while the occasional gem is locked for often the most trivial of reasons?

It's a shame that the value of a thread seems to be determined not by its contents, but by its adherence to the rules.
Oh well, MLP threads are gonna MLP.

Gems must be locked away to prevent them from eventually decomposing to the latter terrible state.
This. While some threads may prove interesting even though it breaks the rules, it will eventually lead to heated arguments. I honestly don't want to see a thread where people are saying "F you Obama" or "wat iz a troll?"

Example;

Why was the Minecraft thread in The Flood locked, while other threads like 'Post your name for a community collage' or 'add yourself to map the bungie comminuty' left open?

My printer thread was locked, then unlocked.

Fun threads do sometimes remain open. The Bungie Community Map thread was created by a mod, so I don't think any other mods would lock it. I haven't seen the other one.

Mods can post spam and awesome community things, where other members can post spam and other community things but get locked/warned/banned.

Oh well.

You can also be permabanned for posting a 7 word sentence saying that you approve of illegal activities. Not saying what it is or how it effects other people, mind you.

How is that relative to my statement?

EDITED: Deleted a whole post worth or ranting cause i did not want to make it known how much pissed off i am about a certain issue and person ... if you can call this *blank* a person.

Key

There are several threads right now which are on the front page that have absolutely no discussion value at all, and are just plain terrible threads. The beard-off thread. Stupid, off-topic, useless, and, in my opinion, should be in the flood anyway. It has nothing to do with Bungie LLC and I'm surprised it hasn't been locked. Another is the name collage thread. Discussion value is equal to that of posting your name and a color. It's essentially a forum game! But, somehow it remains.

So many threads here in the Septagon (though I'm sure you're discussing The Flood) are irrelevant and pointless but don't get locked, while legitimate threads get locked for the most trivial reasons.

Whether a thread is good, bad, lockable or keepable is a matter of opinion.

Unfortunately ours don't matter. Only the Mods.

It might be that bad threads(or posts) aren't really worth a ban because the person doesn't care and does it again or he/she is using an alt and once again doesn't care.
