The rumor you're speaking of is the hacking of Halo2sucks.com, I believe? Well, it really happened, and let me say that no matter how stupid you feel someones opinions are, it's no excuse for illegal activity.
The way Bungie.net seems to be set up to me (I could in fact, be entirely wrong about this) is almost like a set of relays. Like Server block A here has the most up to date info, Block B has 1 minute old data, block C has 2 minute old etc. So a post goes in on block C, and it's visible on Block C, but B and A don't have it yet, but in 2 minutes, it's made it to block A, and in 1 more minute on Block B.
If this assumption is correct, a hacker would have to hack multple servers at once. One thing that lends partial credence to this is that Bungie.net runs at least 3 different IP numbers.
But Bungie has some definite advantages versus hacking that many other places don't. Number one being security software. They are owned by Microsoft after all. Number two is data storage. If I am not mistaken the site and forum is backed up fairly regularly. So were something to slip through the cracks, the web team could have it restored in less than an hour if they're at work when it occurs, and less than 12 if they aren't. Third is the board format itself. This isn't standard IPB, or phpbb forum software, this is custom designed forum software. The kind of people who decided to go mess around over there on that site are people running scripts that allow them to mess with the admin accounts. I don't think it'll work here that easy. Not on custom software.
