I've heard rumors of groups being destroyed by Bungie.net hackors recently. I received this data from two sources, one member who threatened to ally with this hackor and destroy my group unless we would listen to his claims, and again in a group for called the Templar Alliance.

As an initial precautionary measure, I have blacklisted both the "hackor" and the announcer...and have closed membership to my group. However, I strongly dislike this amazingly xenophobic approach to the issue.

What is the official explanation? Are hackors really on the loose?

Thanks for any help,
m00zor

I have also heard these rumours.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Ha, Bungie.Net has much better security than that. Trust me, if people could hack the .Net system, we have a lot more things to worry about than somebody destroying your chapter.

Ignore anyone who says that; they're just stupid kids with nothing better to do than annoy random people on the internet with idle threats.

Well unless they want to hack into the b.net servers and sift through the forum's databases until they find their privilege field for your group and edit it to full control, there's no way they can literally hack their way into your group. Somehow i doubt they're actually doing this.

Failing that, they have to trick their way into you giving them full control, unless they've found some exploit in the idealBB software, which i doubt, because it they have, we'd all be looking at a 1024x768 picture of their arses right now. Because we're not looking at said picture, it's more than likely just idiotic kids trying to -blam!- with people. Ignore them and tell achronos.

Seriously Recon, you're an official guy. Is this a real threat or just people ranting about nothing?

Recon isn't official. He knows nothing of the happenings at bungie. the only actualy moderator who does is Shishka, and ninja 0n fire if you count him.

Not likely. We just have to wait for achronos to come. He will have the answers. but i still doubt that there is a hacker. and if it's true that there isn't one then the starter of the rumour should be ip banned from all of bungie.net not just the public forums.

  • 04.26.2006 9:28 PM PDT

I think it's just some snot nosed little brat who gets his jollies off by harassing ppl on the net like you. We have an extremely succesful group and we are a prime target, so why not???? Plus we do have some competitors and enemies. Message Achronos.

Haha hack b.net. That would be good. When we've all been here for 10 years and think about the good old days we could talk about that time b.net got haxxed. There are more than enough groups that are "hacked" by convincing the owner to give them full control to go around so that people who want to steal groups could just go the path of least resistance. Just learn what the security roles do, and you will be ahead of the curve.

The rumor you're speaking of is the hacking of Halo2sucks.com, I believe? Well, it really happened, and let me say that no matter how stupid you feel someones opinions are, it's no excuse for illegal activity.

The way Bungie.net seems to be set up to me (I could in fact, be entirely wrong about this) is almost like a set of relays. Like Server block A here has the most up to date info, Block B has 1 minute old data, block C has 2 minute old etc. So a post goes in on block C, and it's visible on Block C, but B and A don't have it yet, but in 2 minutes, it's made it to block A, and in 1 more minute on Block B.

If this assumption is correct, a hacker would have to hack multple servers at once. One thing that lends partial credence to this is that Bungie.net runs at least 3 different IP numbers.

But Bungie has some definite advantages versus hacking that many other places don't. Number one being security software. They are owned by Microsoft after all. Number two is data storage. If I am not mistaken the site and forum is backed up fairly regularly. So were something to slip through the cracks, the web team could have it restored in less than an hour if they're at work when it occurs, and less than 12 if they aren't. Third is the board format itself. This isn't standard IPB, or phpbb forum software, this is custom designed forum software. The kind of people who decided to go mess around over there on that site are people running scripts that allow them to mess with the admin accounts. I don't think it'll work here that easy. Not on custom software.

Hardly anyone has any knowledge of how bungie.net works. Or, rather, how Ideal Science works. phpBB is much easier to hack, and halo2sucks.com wasn't really the Fort Knox of web servers.

Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

Simply put, if someone claims to be able to "hack" your chapter/group there is a possibility of three things:

1) They are lying (this is of course the only real answer)
2) They really do not know the definition of 'hacking'.
3) Dey are teh 1337 hax0rz (this is highly improbable/impossible).
