Subject: Why the heck would the UNSC get rid of the MA5B and M6D?

Okay then this has been bothering me lately some what. No, that is a lie. It has bugged the hell out of me.

Many of you hate the M6D and MA5B for many stupid reasons. I hear alot of " Oh it is too powerful. " , " Oh it's too weak. ", " Oh it is too inaccurate. " , " Oh it's too accurate. " , and blah blah blah. Then there are the different magazines saying that the BR replaced the M6D and MA5B. Well they only played an uncompleted version of Halo 2. I also hear alot of people saying that there is no purpose to having either the MA5B or the M6D return.

Wrong. Very, very, wrong. Here's why.

The year is 2552. That is of course, both Halo 1, First Strike, and Halo 2 are all in that same year. On top of that they are within a few weeks of each other.

Now having said that, here is why I brought it up. A military force the size of the UNSC can not replace every single standard issue firearm in such a short time. It would be a waste of resources. A serious waste at that. On top of that it is impossible to mass produce and ship out to every marine and ship left to defend the inner colonies. And yes there are some besides the Sol system. Dozens were passed to get to Reach. But back to my original point.

Getting rid of these two classics would be a sin. They define Halo. However. What could be done is this. The MA5B can be upped in fire power and a little more fine tuned on accuracy. The pistol can also lose about on-third of it's strength and be a bit more inaccurate. That would be more than enough to compensate for both weapons.

..............

Crap. I knew what I was going to finish with, but my mind has run into a block. Give me your opinions on my rant and then I might remember what I was going to finish with.

See? Look, if you don't like the idea, and even if you have zero tolerance for "stupidity" as you said to me, you can stop being so mean.

Oh yeah and another thing. Why would Bungie get rid of two nearly perfectly balanced weapons? And read my quote.

What do you mean balanced? Ugg, it makes no sense to me, I just want you to be quiet. The battle rifle rules, the pistol is ass next to it, and the assult rifle is ass anyway.

Well, in the books, they said that the new weapons were prototypes. Maybe the Earth people got desperate and ditched the old weapons for the newer more powerful ones.

Just so you realize, you don't know how well Earth's production capabilities are in this 'dream' world. Did you see how quickly the United States produced over 40 Ships during WWII? A matter of a few years. And over 4 million guns? Less than 6 months. And this was back in 1939-40. So, I'm assuming their automated system are more more efficient.

  • 05.13.2004 7:49 PM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

What he's saying is that UNSC doesn't have the resources to change the standard issue gun to the battle rifle. I personally don't care.

I agree with Hikaru. Halo is whats called a "Story driven game". Things must be realistic. Those guns define Halo, it would be crappy to take them out. Anyways, think of how stupid this sounds: "Ok, people, we're gonna replace our standard issue assault rifle with a SMG and our standard issue sidearm with a new assault rife within a few monts!" See the ridiculousness?

AHH!!! What about that whole prototype thing I mentioned earlier? It's not that good, I know that, but isn't it worth taking it into consideration?

I agree with Hikaru. It'd be nothing short of a frigging TRAVESTY if the MA5B and M6D were to all of a sudden VANISH from the Halo universe. We still have 6 MONTHS to WAIT here, people!! the Demos being played and reviewed @ E3 and the vids we've seen from the Press Conference are merely the START of our in-game experience. Both are mere DEMOS, showing off the newest features of the sequel. If you notice in last year's E3 Campaign-mode demo, The Chief's player is simply dicking around the entire level - throwing out ghost pilots, mowing down Grunts with infinite-ammo SMGs, and blowing the hell out of that damn Dropship with the new anti-armor 'Hog. Hell, they didn't have the -blam!- HUD back then!

What i've seen from the press conference, with Staten showing off and Hoberman being his little guinea pig, they were just rampaging around a fraction of the new Sanzabar map showing off the Dual-wielding, SPNKr lock-on, destructable vehicles, plasma sword, etc.

WE HAVE SEEN NOTHING, absolutley NO-THING yet.

Key word here: YET.

The pistol, i feel, should merely be toned down, and the AR should just stay the same, or it's gonna be too close to the newer BR.

PATIENCE, my brethren, is a most worth-while VIRTUE.

EDIT: i'm not so much taking a perspective from Halo being a story-driven game, nor am i taking it from realism being a major part in it - i'm factoring in the real-world facts of the Game's DEVELOPMENT, ALONGSIDE these two other factors. The M6D and MA5B simply CANNOT be INSTANTLY replaced with the BR, even WITH out advancements in technology in the projected 2552. It'd be just way too difficult.

Take TODAY for example. We've been changing our nation's arsenal constantly for the last century, from small arms to nukes, and we still see past standard-issue weaponry being used the world over. Uzis, M16s, and let's not forget the almost REDUNDANT Kalshnikov. What was yesterday's standard issue is today's second-hand.

In essence, even IF the BR has replaced all, we can't NOT see the AR or Pistol in Halo 2 - it just simply CAN'T HAPPEN. AND, in any "magical" circumstances, such as a massive change in the story plot, we'd still see it. Bungie's too good to us to pull that crap.

Or, we could have simply melted down all the ammo and guns and formed the new BR. Sorta putting a twist on the same tactic GM used to create the Grease Gun in WW2.

If billions have been killed, Earth seems to have billions, upon billions of people. I'm sure there's PLENTY of civilian resources alone to supply Earth. No one said anything about those away from it.

The Pistol and Assualt rife are not balanced at all. I will take a pistol and you get an assualt rifle and we will see who wins. But, it would be a shame to get rid of them. Just some fine tuning could help. Mabye the BR is a new weapon to the UNSC, availible in small numbers and availible only to spec ops teams. That would eliminate the need to replace all weapons. And besides, maybye the BR is only availible on Earth as it was monufatured on eareth and there fore earth's ground troopers are the first to get it. It never said that ALL the UNSC forces had BRs, only Earth's defenders.

Maybe the battle rifle will only be common with certain units, like the hell jumpers. Special forces, and the like.

In First STrike, time during Slipspace jumps is severly distorted because of the ominous crystal Halsey and the surviving SPARTANs found beneath the CASTLE base on Reach. It's mostly shortened, and actually covers what...a week? maybe 2?

Have you thought that maybe they did not get rid of all the old weapons, but they are coincidentally not in the areas you go to.

good point, i forgot about that. That crystal was pretty crazy. The one thing i don't undterstand is why Locklear blew it up. No, check that. Whay did he kill himself in the process? And how many Spartans were left at the end of First Strike cause they might show up in h2

Apparently Hikaru only thinks people are smart if they agree with what he says. Funny.

Feel free to write up as many pages as you want about this, but the pistol is indeed imbalanced while looking at it in the context of the other weapons. Pistol shouldn't be able to beat an assault rifle close ranged, and it often does. It is overpowered in every way, including the 3 shot kills. Bungie has even admitted that the Pistol is overpowered.

Would you rather Bungie release a game that flows exactly with the novels, or would you like a balanced finished game? I'll take the latter option, thank you.

PS - Oppiten, I love your unique attitude on the forums. Always a pleasure seeing a post from you that rips on someone else. (No scarcasm intended.)
