Subject: Seven years

I pretty much completely agree with all your points. The forums are harder to enjoy nowadays, probably due to the... "quality" of the younger member's posts. I've been looking for a good forum to just spend time in and enjoy. I honestly can't find one other than a group I'm a part of. And while that's fun and all it's only a small portion of the community I get to interact with.

Tej~

Best thread i've seen in a while, i'd love some of the changes you suggested.

I dig the ideas, we need more mods, mods to actually have fun, and a more rewarding title system.

Furthermore, I can't believe I read all of that.

Get ya popcorn and eat the thickest dick if you think I would waste time lyin to any of u.

I read page one only so sorry if this is completely off topic:

Groups are still active. They take a long time to build and sustain, so the ones that you see currently aren't the outcome of someone spamming PM's to everyone they see in the flood for a few hours, they are the outcome of literally thousands of people joining and quitting to get an active base. Obviously you already know this, but I feel like you think people make groups and magically have 150-200 members the next day that all post a couple times a week. If you want to be in an active group with people that share a common interest with you, take the initiative upon yourself and start the group. You've been here for seven years; it can't be too hard to spread the word for a few months and see where it goes.

The tide is turning, brothers! Let us take our kingdom back!

What incentive would there be for newer members to stick around if they couldn't post in the Flood? The FAQ would need a furious update, and even then, it isn't likely that anyone would read it.

Unless, of course, a newer member trying to gain access to the Flood for the first time was redirected to the FAQ page with a handy little message sent to them by some automatic system.

Yo Halo53, I'm real happy for you and I'ma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best bungie.net profiles of all time. OF ALL TIME!

While I agree with some of the OP's points, I think the state of this site at the moment is unlike anything we have ever seen before. We've always known what was around the corner and what the next step would be. Right now we on the outside have no real knowledge of what is in store for Bungie in the future. That goes for both their next game and the future of this website as well. We're in uncharted territory, just as many of us were beginning to believe we'd seen it all.

Its for this reason that I'm holding back my feedback on the state of the site at this time. We're in between projects, and not only that but we have almost no info on where we're headed. Bungie no longer controls the Halo franchise, and I'm sure most people have not played Crimson. Anyone sticking around now of all times is here solely for the community.

Besides, I get the feeling we're going to see some major changes in the coming months. Gaming-related announcements are a given, but I think this website is going to start to see some changes as it looks to move forward with a new franchise. Those changes will come in the form of gaming news, but also probably in some new features as well as new members. As the people in the community change and the way we interact with the community changes, there will be a whole new barrel of issues to discuss, and many of the discussions we're having today might soon become irrelevant.

This. I've been here for 7 and half years...and I have to say, apart from the above, AGE plays the biggest role in me not visiting Bungie.net the way I used to.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

What boggles my mind, is after seven years you still care enough to post that much criticism when you likely know what the result will be.

But congrats to your seven years.

And there it is: the perfect reply to this thread, and I let Helveck take it.

My reaction.

I was moderator/admin of a group with over 1,000 members for the better part of four years. :P

Takes work to keep interested, to keep it alive and to make sure there's always something going on. The problem is that I don't find any of the active groups I've come across interesting, and finding new groups is a bloody chore.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Once again a "x years" post with some nice ideas that will provide good discussion but no real change.

I don't have much to add besides repeating previous concepts such as: A big step towards achieving number 7 would be to remove the ghastly salmon text. All it does is separate the mod from the community.

I feel so... New reading this thread. Maybe that's the problem. I'm intimidated by you guys. You all seem so close. I feel so small and insignificant in comparison to these 7 year members, or these people calling each other by names and reminiscing. It scares me and I'm surprised if I actually hit reply...

I don't know how many posts I've typed then unmade because I'm intimidated. The only place I'm not is in the Flood and there I feel like crap because it's either "Be intelligent and get a bunch of replies saying lol-blam!-, or other troll responses" or "Dey see me trollin, dey hatin"

Those are the only two roles I see open on this forum... The community forums seem dead, there's no activity here other than a few scattered posts throughout the day, and the Flood is over-active, it's hard to have decent conversation, and the Classifieds is pointless, as I don't even know where to start with groups...

I mean it feels like there is some island in the middle of Bungie. In there is all the people who are long time friends, old members, the staff, etc. Then you have this area around it, separated by a sea, and a gigantic, fear inducing draw bridge. And on the other shore, is all the new members.

It's just my opinion here... Take it or leave it. I'm just putting in my view... Thanks for giving me the opportunity(totally looked opportunity up on Dictionary.com XD) to have a decent, intelligent discussion on the Bungie Network... Thank you.

I guess it's time to crawl back into the Flood... "Into the Flood again, same ol trip it was back theeeeen."

EDIT: Come on! I type all this out to miss ONE "IT'S"... I'm gonna go cry.

My Best Bungie moment: finally beating all the Halo games on solo legendary.
My Worst Bungie moment: not seeing giant stuffie grunts in the Bungie store.

The forums are definitely quiet these days. I'm sure that will change whenever Bungie's current project is released.
A new game will bring new members and will create millions of new topics to discuss. So I guess just be patient.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

That definitely plays a big part. But it's not the only reason, IMO. Look at a site like reddit, or neogaf; plenty of people 18 and up, with jobs and lives and everything use them. It's understandable that people will become less active as things like college, employment, and significant others remove large chunks of free time from life. But millions of people sit down and check facebook every day when they get a chance, while many long time and devoted members of this community continue not just to cut back, but to completely drift away. If not for sub-communities I think the falloff would be significantly higher.

User retention isn't just a problem, though: I think it's a symptom. The real problem is a lack of purpose -- ie, for all the reasons people have mentioned, there's simply nothing for most people to do here other than look at stats. (There's an idea floating around in my head about how stats could be part of the answer, but I haven't really thought it out yet.)

While many of those problems stem from the community itself, I think there are ways to mitigate the noise and increase the quality of the site. Hopefully whatever Achronos is cooking will help. On the plus side, I don't think we're wanting for employee interaction these days. I can't remember a time when so many employees were posting so frequently. Sure most of it it silly one-off posts, but I'd rather have that than have them be relegated to official announcements and PR. ...In fact, I think the fact that employees feel comfortable enough to come in here and post jokes is one of the brightest signs for the place.
