Or are new fans just as good?

Why do Bungie make games? Is it for the money, or is it their desire to entertain people?

If Bungie thought that some of its oldest fans were losing interest in their games, would they do anything about it?
What could be done?

Are we all just consumers in their eyes, or do they especially value those who have been playing their games since the beginning?

It seemed like a lot of older fans didn't get into Halo Reach. Is this overlooked because of the influx of new fans?

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

Interesting questions. Valid too.

I would wonder if the question would get varied responses within the team. I would imagine that it might.

They've stated that they make games that interest, excite and are what they want to play... I wonder if they see their fans as being considered in that statement?

What kind of question is that?

A rhetorical one.

  • 11.10.2011 4:03 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

Bungie isn't the kind of company that makes games just for money.

  • 11.10.2011 4:03 PM PDT

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

Bungie are a company first and foremost, they are not our 'super internet BFF's' despite popular belief.

Thus, I assume they look at all fans as money (and rightfully so), but of course will reserve some hot steamy love for us Bungie fans.

I won't answer all of your questions as they only promote speculation and the sort, and without carrying out a survey for Bungie, it is impossible to find an accurate representation to their true feelings of the fans.

Never give up, never surrender!

Bungie make games because it's their passion. Ofcourse they care for their older fans. They wouldn't be where they are without them.

Bungie wanted to try something a bit different with Reach and some liked it, some didn't. That's just the way it is sometimes.

Now that they're no longer tied to Halo, they are free to make whatever they choose. With this freedom to make whatever they want, I have no doubt they will make something that will wow new fans as well as the Old.

Key

Yes.

Equal.

For fun and money.

Both.

Of course.

Asking them what they want and applying some of it.

Would they participate and update (in) these websites as often as they do if we were the former?

I'm sure they appreciate them (more so) those who've been here longer, as they're more dedicated.

It seems there's no way to tell A) how long those who didn't like Reach have been here as they don't check the join date of every member after reading every post or B) how many of said older members actually disliked Reach.

If reasons were given why older fans were losing interest they might do something about it if it helped the overall quality of the game.

Overall I like to think that Bungie listens to their community more than most other game companies, however they are a company for profit.

"The beginning" as you put it is an interesting idea, because Bungie has been making games a lot longer than the vast majority of us have been here.

Exactly... Where did the original fans go?

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

Should they value older fans more than newer ones?

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends;
Not with a bang but a whimper.

I'd imagine they don't care about their older fans anymore than they do their new ones, even if they care beyond just a profit. Also, who do we define as the older fans? I know people have a general contempt for the '07 '08 group, but they have now been around for three to four years.

RIP Halo 2

It's a business. Can't dwell on the opinions of a minority of your fan base. Most people that have been playing their games for a while will buy their next one. So that leaves a small percentage of old fans that really isn't worth the effort to try and keep interested.

  • 11.10.2011 4:24 PM PDT

Bungie employees are relatively older and happen to be some of the biggest fans of their game. I'm sure "fun" is probably one of the biggest driving factors in their development.

Hmm, I'd like to think they care about their long time fans.

I'll speak for myself on the whole "not getting into Reach" thing. Honestly, the main reason I didn't get into Reach was because I thought the disregard for existing canon was not something I wanted to deal with in the Universe that I loved. That and the fact that almost none of my friends stuck with the game either. Honestly, at this point in my life I need friends to play multiplayer games with me or I just don't find them fun.

To be honest, they could probably couldn't give a -blam!- less about their fans (aside from the ones who actually go on here). The ones who do the programming and stuff want money, and they make games they want to play; they don't necessarily give a rat's ass about us.

They give us what we want in a game for money. That's it. That's why they don't, say, pull something like "hey! Everyone can have a free sweater!". They do things for charity to look good, and give us games for cash.

I breathe BR, not kidding homie.

Sure Bungie cares,
As for Incentives: Money or being awesome/making great games-
It's both, they want to make an awesome game, but it's not like they can just give it out for free. They are a game company. They host a large number of jobs, for people who need money because they work there, and its there job. Obviously. Be realistic here, c'mon lol.

i mean, its not just all "Bungie iz greedy LOLOL"
If anything, Bungie is one of the more notable game companies that shows that they care for community old and new. Including small things with reach, i.e nameplates.

Its interesting you chose the word "Bungie" to direct your question.

Each employee would have different opinions on where they would like the company to go, what they think the fans will enjoy, and their own opinions on how important old fans are.

Of course Bungie as a whole would not want to lose fans that have been around since the start, or before Halo, but a company has to grow, push the boundaries, to boldly go where no game dev has gone before.

What if you define "best Fan" as the person who brings you new customers through frequent referrals, and who sticks with you through thick and thin? That customer, I think, is worth far more than what she might pay you in any one transaction. In fact, if you think of that customer as your best marketer instead, it might change everything.

I know for fact that Microsoft doesn't, but mostly all big businesses just look at dollar signs. That's how it is in the progressive world.

The way you treat your best customers is a fork in the road. You either treat them better or worse than everyone else. Are the most loyal hardcore fans the kickback to help pave the way for more successful ventures in the future business as usual, or recognizing the fans that got you where you are today and empowering them to spread the word of why your product is so great.

I would assume that eventually for everyone life get's in the way. Most users presence on Bungie.net ebbs and flows with the extra time they have available to them to screw around on the internet.

They are a business. They will make a game to cater to a larger market. Thats why there were 4 halo games.
