Bungie does not make games for profit or for their fans, but rather with objective purpose. While the meaning behind of their games can be more difficult to pick up on, some are more obvious than others. For instance, the Halo series was actually a subtle and yet thorough criticism of the historically brutal nature of popular religion.
Relevent.

Hi I'm RT and I like to argue!

To be honest, they could probably couldn't give a -blam!- less about their fans (aside from the ones who actually go on here). The ones who do the programming and stuff want money, and they make games they want to play; they don't necessarily give a rat's ass about us.
LOL!

You would do well to read this; I suspect the people running Bungie are already familiar with the concept:
"There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else." -- Sam Walton

This thread reminds me of Reptilian Rob.

Ha! I thought to myself that we need Rob in here to really get this thread going.

For 343 all you have to do is ask on there forums and they'll make the change if enough people ask.

If that were true, Reach would be ruined. Have you read some of the ideas on that site?

I know, I wonder why they stopped.
Bungie used to cater to the forums members. Now they dont care to much for us unless its some lame thread about them or facial hair.

I would wonder if the question would get varied responses within the team. I would imagine that it might.
I bet it would, but it's unlikely we'd see those responses. It would be bad PR.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

To answer the rhetorical question, it's both. Ultimately, they have to make money at the end of the day. But they all want to make the most entertaining game out there.

Entertainment = Money

No one wants to play or buy a game, or the game franchise if it isn't entertaining.

As for Halo: Reach, I guess it was more of a "What do the fans want? And how can we change/innovate in a way that won't piss off the fans?"

And I think they succeeded as best they could.

Because at the end of the day, they can't appease everybody.

I somehow really doubt that. Sure, you need to enjoy your job and appease your largest fan base. But I don't see them exactly doing great wondrous deeds for the older fan base.

Or are new fans just as good?

Why do Bungie make games? Is it for the money, or is it their desire to entertain people?

If Bungie thought that some of its oldest fans were losing interest in their games, would they do anything about it?
What could be done?

Are we all just consumers in their eyes, or do they especially value those who have been playing their games since the beginning?

It seemed like a lot of older fans didn't get into Halo Reach. Is this overlooked because of the influx of new fans?

Before you read my reply please turn your screen upside down.

Answers:
1.) The older fans are usually always good, but an influx of new fans can be a good thing too. It depends.
2.) Both, but more so entertaining their community.
3.)I'm sure Bungie could do something subtle/snazzy to reel their old fans back in. Creepy mass-produced love letters.
4.)I'm sure their paychecks make them very happy, but I also believe what's more priceless is knowing the feeling they've succeeded in blowing our minds by making exceptional games for the past 20 years and counting.
5.) Where's the pie chart?

They certainly made Reach for the money, piece of crap that it was.

I heard someone say once (paraphrasing here) "Multiflag on Blood Gulch with your friends is what makes Halo, Halo." I GUARANTEE that more people agree with that sentiment than "Getting a 50 in MLG is what makes Halo, Halo." - Oboewan42

Right...if that were true for Reach it'd be true for every Halo, in which case the dual wielding, vehicle hijacking, etc. that was added starting with Halo 2 wouldn't exist. Why? Because I'm sure everyone would have been fine with a graphically updated Halo every 3 years, since they're fine with a graphically updated COD4 every year.

Not always, you'll lose customers if that's how you view business. You have fans because they care, the best business' care about their fans. That doesn't mean communism, and social networking always finds a funny way to end up that way, because the networking never gets passed the 'online' aspect of gaming and into real face to face times with people.

Halo has people building maps, teaming up within pro gaming, going to events, cosplay, people with legos, fabricating really materialistic things and making independent games and films around a GAME

Now, why is this?

Not only because of a capitalistic mentality with no anxiety of being screwed of a possible Bungie -blam!-gery cease and desist, but quite the opposite actually, because they WANT to empower their fans with recognition that signals other fans to help each other out. Then this becomes networking, and brings a lot lots more business to the quality product, simply because it is a quality product and Bungie's capital will remain with them. Much like how Blizzard operates. Something that you want to pay for and share around. and create... being creative... being collaborative...

Other than that it's business as usual for the pot heads with all the money that continue to churn out more of the same but, but, but it's more of what the collective wants bringing the rest of the industry down a notch, business as usual. Thank god for independent game enthusiasts. Independent gaming wants to be AAA anyways.

Bungie is a business the goal of a business is to make money, not much needs to be said beyond that.
