Not always, you'll lose customers if that's how you view business. You have fans because they care, the best business' care about their fans. That doesn't mean communism, and social networking always finds a funny way to end up that way, because the networking never gets passed the 'online' aspect of gaming and into real face to face times with people.
Halo has people building maps, teaming up within pro gaming, going to events, cosplay, people with legos, fabricating really materialistic things and making independent games and films around a GAME
Now, why is this?
Not only because of a capitalistic mentality with no anxiety of being screwed of a possible Bungie -blam!-gery cease and desist, but quite the opposite actually, because they WANT to empower their fans with recognition that signals other fans to help each other out. Then this becomes networking, and brings a lot lots more business to the quality product, simply because it is a quality product and Bungie's capital will remain with them. Much like how Blizzard operates. Something that you want to pay for and share around. and create... being creative... being collaborative...
Other than that it's business as usual for the pot heads with all the money that continue to churn out more of the same but, but, but it's more of what the collective wants bringing the rest of the industry down a notch, business as usual. Thank god for independent game enthusiasts. Independent gaming wants to be AAA anyways.

Bungie is a business the goal of a business is to make money, not much needs to be said beyond that.
