With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Ok, OXM says that the Special Forces Elites are white in armor color... this brings up a problem:

Black used to be what was thought to be the Spec. Forces/Ops color.... Black makes sense, since darker colors are usually associated with Special Forces (but hell, its the Covenant.... Purple, silver, maroon, and light-blue don't make sence as battle armors, do they....)

Also, note that the Spartans encounter white Grunts in First Strike... these Grunts were unarmed. Why the hell would a Special Forces Grunt (if thats actually what it was) be unarmed?!

Anyone else share my confusion?

No, I fail to even see an issue here.

Maybe I'm just overanalyzing things... I tend to do that when I get overstimulated (this huge wave of new Halo 2 info is overstimulating me....)

Don't listen to Oppiten. He's kind of grumpy right now.

Well, Spec Ops uniforms are bound to change anyway, it really does not matter.

Dark colors are not always associated with Special Operations soldiers. It really depends on what type of environment the operation is in. If its in an arctic location do you think the soldier are going to be wearing a black BDU and black face paint? Its unlikely. The type of camoflague and BDU is chosen based on the environment.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

You're right, it doesn't make sense, but whatever.

actually, forces in white armor are an engineering level. Those Grunts were carrying tools, not weapons.
here are the ranks:

Grunts:
Orange: Minor
Red: Major
Black: Spec-Ops
White: Engineer

Jackals:
Blue: Minor
Orange/Red: Major

Engineers:
Purple: Worker

Elites:
Blue: Minor
Red: Major
Light Blue: Cloak
Black: Spec-Ops
Gold: Commander

Hunters:
Blue/Gray: Soldier

Brutes:
None: Soldier

Prophets:
Any: Holy

i hope this helps

EDIT
source: Halo player's guide (it tells you everything, not that you need it)
this info is all that is known about covanent ranks

The grunts are ninjas. How funny would that be to have to fight a ninja grunt?

They'll be like Yoda.

Heh, maybe we'll get to set those ninjas on fire.

Anyhow, you're right about the arctic thing. But black can work in just about any environment that has dark shadows.

And the "engineer" grunts that you propose were dressed in white, yes... but so is the Elite featured in OXM, which is labeled as a Special Forces Elite (I've already stated this).

Was there a picture of it? What was behind it (as in muliplayer level, single player.) What was the article about? Where did it mention this?

That seems to be the stereotypical thing to say. Black is too dark for shadows. I have studied the military and Ninjutsu for many many years. Black is a horrible camoflague for blending with shadows. I have always found dark brown and dark green and blue works much better then black.

White may very well be special forces. Black was technically Veteran status, not spec ops.

Thats what it says in the books. Black was always the color for the Veteran rank and not Special Forces. I have fought people about that for months, but many believe differently.

i don't care what color they are so long as they aren't white that would be to easy to snipe a white elite in the middle of a city.

Unless it was a Covenant city or out in the middle of a snowy canyon.
