I dont think being trained from a young age helps at all, I think an individual must grow up normally and know what it is to have a life apart from war because it would help the individual realise the purpose of fighting, to protect the average life. Also someone who is raised normally and then trained would have a greater grasp on how people work and why they make certain choices.
You may not remember, but John's view changed throughout the course of the novels he was in. I can give two instances of this.
1.At the start, John viewed marines as something to be protected, more of an objective and excess baggage rather than human beings. But over the course of time, especially the battles held on Halo, John began to see the marines as, well, humans. He began thinking more about them and their limits, putting himself in harms way so they didn't have to.
2. Halsey gives John two data crystals containing information on The Flood. One contains info on Johnson's unique condition and all available data on The Flood, which will surely lead to Johnson's death at the hands of ONI in an attempt to study him and find a way to combat the flood.
The other simply contained all available info on the flood excluding Johnson's condition blocking him from being infected. At first, John, without hesitation chose the first option. but at the end of the events of TFS, John chooses the second option, crushing the first one into dust.
Sacrifice one Human life, to have a tiny chance at saving millions when the Flood is encountered over a small chance of a cure?
The events of Halo finally put things into context for John, it showed him what he was really fighting for, the life of every man woman and child.
