Seeing purple in place of grey is actually pretty common. To make grey additively one can add green, blue and violet. In addition, most operating systems engage in something called sub-pixel rendering. Instead of switching a whole RGB pixel group to generate the line of the text, to produce a smoother curve, the individual red, green and blue elements are switched individually, giving a finer grain (a higher spatial resolution) at the expense of colour accuracy (barely perceptable). It's entirely possible you are seeing more blue, leading to a purple tinge.
