I can understand forum ninjas needing attention grabbing coloured text when they were 'laying down the law' on the forums in the past, however we rarely see moderators informing members of their mistakes these days via posts, as they seem to favour warnings and bans.

Most of the orange text we see is in so called witty posts in random threads.

Is it really still necessary for the moderators to have their distracting, attention grabbing and often derailing coloured text?
Would their forum title and maybe an orange title bar be enough?

On a separate but related note, if member titles/titlebars were to be done away with, should the moderators profiles follow suit?

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

Given the "new" warning system, ect, I agree with this. I've seen plenty of forums where the only indication of a moderator was a title and some little icon, and it didn't seem to be hard to figure out. The orange bar would be perfect, IMO.

Mods hardly ever seem to do any public hands-on enforcement these days, so it might be nice to let them back into the community a bit.

Not necessarily. I see evilcam in the flood a fair amount. Just posting like a "normal user". For myself, I frequent the Flood a lot. So I don't really care if I see orange text because of all the Coups I see.

But I guess if I didn't use Coup, I could see how simply the orange title bar would be enough. I dig it.

By my witty posts comment, I meant just any posts they make that aren't "moderating" posts.

I think the orange text is inappropriate in most discussion as it seems to give the moderators post more attention and even more credibility when they may not actually be an authority on the topic of that discussion.

Tej~

Coup sort of solves this problem, instead of taking away the ninja's colours, it gives everyone else colours.

Yeah, but a lot of us are over 12 so we don't use coup.

No, I don't think it is entirely necessary for their text color to be orange. But I wouldn't consider it annoying or distracting. Then again, some might. It really all depends on how others handle it. Some might be mature enough for it, others might freak out.

I could see just an orange title bar and no orange text being fine, but I don't have anything against the current settings.

Whoo.

Well it's not uncommon to see a moderator comment right before locking a thread to explain why he/she is locking it, not to say they need (or want) orange text, simply that they do still, and rather often, "lay down the law".

It's a long shot, but we might even see moderators post more often when their posts can be seen as a normal post and not assumed to be something special, due to how much it stands out currently.

More often than not a moderator posts in response to a thread with their own opinion as opposed to posting as a representative of Bungie.net administration.

No. It derails threads and separates the mod from the community, making it nearly impossible for them to post like a "normal" user. Also, it's bloody ugly.

Would their forum title and maybe an orange title bar be enough?Yes. Although I think they need something more subtle than orange. In fact, I think it would work pretty good if they had regular title bars (normal, herioc, legendary, mythic) with "Forum Moderator" slapped on there. Ninja would confuse new members.

Plus, they have custom avatars.

On a separate but related note, if member titles/titlebars were to be done away with, should the moderators profiles follow suit?Probably. Or, like I said, give them a very subtle colour.

This is one of the few forum changes that I feel strongly about. Moderators are always complaining how they can't engage in the community normally and how they want to be just seen as a regular member and yet they have this bright, obnoxious text.

And if they are so attached to the title bars and hard-to-read text, they could just implement a system where they could switch it on and off. So when they are making 'official' comments from their position as a mod, they'd click a box, and when they are just making regular posts they'd leave it and look exactly like one of us.

I'll probably be posting this same thing, more or less, for the next few years. I don't see change on the horizon.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

But how else are we going to see them and then quote them, making us seem cool?

I don't think I could reliably tell the difference at this point if the user didn't have a special title. So I wouldn't worry about that part.

On another subject, I do think it would be good to encourage mods to post more in one way or another. I'd say that every one of them would have a positive influence on the community. Even posting one-liners usually demonstrates the whole "play nice" thing that many people don't seem to get.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

I'm sure certain people will still find a way.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Or maybe it is our problem, it is just orange text, it isn't that big of a deal.

Why should they have to change for a few people wanting attention.

That's what the "Forum Moderator" thing would be for.

Yeah I agree with that! It'd be nice to see a rainbow of golds and salmons in the forum.

When one person does something, it's a fluke. When a noticeable chunk of the population does it, it's because the system either fosters it or does nothing to deter it. It's usually a good idea to subtly discourage unwanted behavior when possible -- or in this case, not encourage it.

I had it installed for a day or two...but that thing is tiring. Uninstalled.

On the other hand, I don't see the moderators text as being a problem. They also do still use it to give out advice, but it is usually as the last post in a locked thread. I personally don't mind the "witty banter" threads because that is what I come here for.

If pinkish-purplish-fishish text colored people want to participate...good for them.

The problem is the at least some of them don't, specifically because of the attention their posts inevitably draw.

There are certainly other things keeping some from posting, but I think this is worth considering.

I agree with the colored text being done away with for the Moderators, and they just keep the Salmon colored bar, with the title "Forum Ninja"
