If forum titles were done away with and a new member is given the advice to "PM a mod if any given situation on the forums is or gets REALLY bad", how would they do that? They wouldn't know who is or isn't anforum ninja. There's no reason to lessen their "position" (if it can be called that) because of the fact that some people can't handle the idea of being objective about everyone's posts on the forums.

Also, I see evilcam telling people what they did wrong all the time, as well as other mods, however less of a frequency they do it with.

Just my opinion. Quite sure I'll be accused of mod-ass-kissing. Oh well.

The idea really isn't to hide the moderators. A differently colored bar with "Forum Ninja/Moderator" would make it obvious who was a mod. This would just make it less blatant. Kind of like cops wearing this instead of this. You can spot them both easily, but one looks like someone with a job to do and the other looks like a tourist attraction.

if knowledge is power and power corrupts, isn't knowledge therefore dangerous?
Black Tower

I suppose that all Bungie Employees should lose their gold text as well, especially in threads like this?

I see nothing wrong with attention grabbing colors; gets people to pay attention good or bad.

IMO, no. Employees are always posting as an employee, whether they like it or not. It makes more sense to call out their posts than it does for moderators at the moment.

That's just the thing... Say we're in the Flood having a discussion on cats vs dogs, for example. If a moderator comes in and says they like dogs, to most users it isn't just another opinion, it's somewhat of an official one.
It's not fair to the other people in the discussion for a moderator to be given special attention or credibility when their title has nothing to do with the topic.

Just as Bungie employees are never not seen as "speaking for Bungie", moderators are always "speaking as moderators". In both cases, even when they aren't speaking for anyone but themselves, they are viewed as being "official".

If they were allowed to turn off their color, it would be easier for them to go under the radar, yes. But that also means it would be easier for them to forget that everyone knows they are moderators, and forget that they have to hold themselves to the standard that implies. The same goes with Bungie employees - if they post on Bungie.net, I give them gold text, not because they necessarily want to have a big target painted on them, but because they need it to remember that people know they are employees and anything they say will be treated as an official press release.

This is non-negotiable. It is for both our protection, their protection, and your protection. You're not going to convince me that it is a bad idea. There are lots of cases where a person who could be considered a representative of an organization posts something they think is anonymous or off the record only to have it come back to them in a bad way. The colors and titles DIRECTLY prevent that kind of thing from happening - it isn't arbitrary, it was very deliberately done and has nothing to do with some ambigious worry about elitism - which I still think many people on these forums are way too paranoid about and are generally acting like luddites about new features because of that paranoia.

Although that was 3 years ago, it seems to remain a perfectly valid argument. Moderators posts are seen by some to be representing Bungie, and the orange text reminds them that their posts do matter, as well as reminding members that they are moderators.

I also disagree that the text causes derailing. I haven't noticed that many threads being derailed because of moderators recently, and even if a thread is derailed, it is not necessarily caused by the coloured text. Few people (I hope) think, "They have coloured text, so I must therefore quote them multiple times." At the very least, I would have thought they would do that because they realize the member is a moderator, not because of their text, and even without a coloured bar or a title, moderators will still be recognized by other members.

On a separate but related note, if member titles/titlebars were to be done away with, should the moderators profiles follow suit?
He seems to be asking if we should do away with their titles, if my reading comprehension is up to snuff.

I was responding to that part. Probably should have made that clearer, in hindsight.

Jesus, I was only there when blade made his post. Why the hell did that many people quote him? I'm sure it's JUST a queue. My post was entirely kidding (obviously). A queue is a queue is a queue is a queue.

Definitely a good argument on the pro-side of things (in respect to the OP), though.

I don't get why the white text was cut in the first place...
That damn underrated ultra bright lettering...I'd take that over ugly salmon.

I propose doing away with the orange altogether. Simply give them the title "Forum Ninja" and have them use whatever their title bar color would be, had they not been a ninja. I think thats the best option. The orange is very attention grabbing, although sexy.

The salmon text? I don't find it too annoying.

Although, many forum ninjas post high contrast walls of text.

The Black Chapter

It only serves the same purpose as a Bungie employee - i.e a massive 'Quote me, Quote me'.
I understand why employees should have different text colours as they can be answering important questions or announcing some information.
A Ninja is just a member with just as little to announce as I do....and I have bugger all to announce.

For Carnage, Apply Within.

I have returned from the Untamed Lands. MOAP is dead.

I don't like the shade of blue used for links when read next to a mod's orange text. It hurts my eyes a lot and so does switching from reading orange text to white text.

What we have now is superior to the old style when members could use their own colored text. I can deal with the bright blue links and orange text if it means we never go back to that.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Posted by:AchronosSo, what, he's worried that we remove the Ninja's fancy colours they'll start breaking rules or being jerks?

It seems like a decent reason to keep them standing out, but the salmon title bar and custom avatar do that well enough, they don't need the ridiculous text too.

I'd be in favor with a blue colored text that's dark enough to not be obnoxious but light enough to still pop on the black backdrop.

It'd fit with the sites aesthetic design and overall color scheme, and would still satisfy any proponents for the text color difference.

I couldn't have said it better myself. And I mean, really, who cares if people break the rules more? Then we know who the actual caring members are apart from the flaming morons. It's not like people breaking actual laws, where officers in uniform are a good way to keep citizens civil. The avatar and title seem to be enough, really.

Skibur, you should know that the orange text is there for the sole purpose of quotestorming. It has also been proven through studies of children 9-16 to increase the humor of anything written in said orange text.

Got a question, comment, or concern? PM me.

I don't really like the orange text because it is usually the downfall of a productive thread. Basically, as soon as you see the orange text prepare for a 10 page quote pyramid.

I'm sure there are more reasons for people to quote them (Sucking up to the mods being another major reason), but to me the orange text is what does it.

This is all being sarcastic of course. I don't really see it being that big of a deal. It just shows they are a mod. They would probably derail the thread with quotes regardless simply because they are a mod. Stuff like this happens on every website.

What's bad is that some mods actually post things that I would like to have a discussion about but I refuse to do so because it would seem I'm sucking up to them or quoting them just to quote them. Knowing that people will do both pretty much eliminates the chance that they even read a reply so I don't do it. That's the only downside I have on a personal level and it's a bit of a big one because even with the mods there are very few people on this site that can hold an intellectual conversation. The colored text eliminates the mods from that group for me because of the reactions by the community.
