Apparently I have to take this as the official moderator position on this issue.

You know better and you know that's not true.

I can't, couldn't and wouldn't anymore speak on behalf of the moderating staff than I could speak on behalf of Bungie.... or you.

I give my own views, my own opinions. I can only hope that you are/were joking when you posted that and I was the only reader who missed the joke.

Posted by: Achronos
Just as Bungie employees are never not seen as "speaking for Bungie", moderators are always "speaking as moderators". In both cases, even when they aren't speaking for anyone but themselves, they are viewed as being "official".
Achronos said that in a negative way. Meaning the masses SHOULDN'T think of them that way, but (unfortunately) they do. He's not giving legitimacy to the ideology, he's just saying it exists.

To speak on behalf of other people who's opinions are as varied as their usernames? I don't think that's the reason...

Why is that?

They're just members, like anyone else. Why should anyone think anything differently? I've always thought we had altered text because that would make it easier to see when we are using "moderator authority" when posting. The point of course being so that people notice it when we attempt to correct some kind of offending behavior or action. I see some cross over when it comes to "speaking for mods" from that, but certainly not that every post we make is some sort of official stance or policy.

Like I said, you have a valid point with this Ski. Though as you have IMO mis-represented why we have this Salmonness, don't really see enough of a point to change it. Most people seem to be able to detect the difference between moderator posts, official policy, and regular posting.

Well you don't have it so your opinion can stand out more than others in a discussion, but that's the effect it has, imo.

I can't argue with that. That is its end effect, for some people. Though, I can argue that its not my fault or problem if people misunderstand its intentions. You for example, know that salmon text is unimportant. I'm sure most of the people who at least frequent this forum know that too. Its the other people who might not understand it fully to ask about it, or find out the truth for themselves.

That in and of itself gives merit to your position though. Which I'm not against. Like I said, I don't care about text color. It won't effect me. I just don't think this is a big enough problem to warrant a change.

  • 11.12.2011 8:11 PM PDT

I am in support for the moderators keeping their colored text, and here are my reasons why.

You see, I have a pretty rare condition where I must always quote and make some sort of witty reply to any moderator or employee that posts in a thread that I have read. It's maddening. Always compulsively quoting, quoting, quoting, moderators and employees even though I am fully aware of what an ass I'm being when I do. Whenever I try to skip over I always have to come back, and if I don't I have this horrible butterfly feeling in my stomach. And if it turns out that I missed one...you don't want to know.

That's why I like the salmon text. It makes them conspicuous and obvious so I always know to quote. If they went back to normal colored text, I would miss them often and then...no...no, not now! No! NOOO!!!!

Meh.

If site management wants us to have it, then fine.

If site management wants us to not have it, fine as well.

Everyone may have their own reasons, but the only one(s) that matter are the folks who can enable/disable is in the first place.
That's a strange standpoint you have because I distinctly remember you posting about how it would be ideal to have the option to opt in or out of the salmon text from post to post. I think you might have even posted about it on two different occasions.

Or am I mistaken?

No, you are correct. I am saying that while I personally don't want, need or place any value on colored text, member title, etc. I have done everything that I can as a member to eliminate those trappings.

My point is that the ninjas have our titles and colored text because the admins of this site consider it to be worthwhile, just as the members of this site have title and colored bars because the admins of this site consider the feature to be worthwhile. Their site, their decisions, and my personal preference is not required or a part of that decision. And that is fine by me. Take them away, keep them, expand them, restrict them... I don't personally care. Because I don't pay any attention to any of it.

For example, I saw your post, read the content and found it was addressed at me, and so I replied. Bar color, avatar, title, none of that was considered or relevant to our conversation. Nor should it be.

Hang on a second, are you trying to explain that the moderator of bungie.net should post more often explaining why than just banning or warning member for breaking the code of conduct? You probably didn't spend a minute in either Foman or Duardo's shoe of their life. They did explain the member what and why they broke the rules of conduct.

This is absurd, Skibur. Telling moderator what they should do, is just simply rude and disrespectful. Madness, I say!

I don't know you, so I can't tell if you're joking. If you're not: No, skibur is not saying moderators need to explain themselves more. He's saying that their colored text often garners enough attention to sidetrack discussions for the wrong reason, so we should consider ditching it. Also, he has spent a minute or two in their shoes.

Why does it matter though?
What matters is pretty relative. As far as I'm concerned, nothing that happens anywhere on this site matters... I've got far more important things to worry about. Whether the moderators have colored text falls somewhere between "Who just won the world series?" and "Will the final season of chuck manage not to suck?" on the scale of things I care about, personally.

But we're all here. And while we're here, we might as well try to make this place as useful and interesting as it can be. This would be a step in the positive direction, IMO.

But really it's the moderators whose opinions matter in this case. They don't seem to care much either way. Ironically though, when Recon stated that his personal opinion wasn't meant to convey a group opinion, he gave some support to Skibur's argument. The quote from Achronos implies that he knows the colors enforce the idea that they're speaking "officially". We all know he wasn't. In a similar situation elsewhere, would newcomers? I dunno.
