The book and the game contradict each other.. So what exactly happened? Can someone give me a summary of what the official story is?

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Reach fell in a matter of hours, while in game, Reach fell over the course of an entire month.

Something in between those.

People seem to forget, or just don't want to remember a few things.

1: Fall of Reach only briefly covers the fall of Reach in just 40 pages. It only covers the space battle in detail while the battle on the ground is mostly left very vague (due to the point of view of the PoA which is in space at that time). What FoR tells us about the fall of Reach and the battle on the panet is very basic and doesn't really cover anything in depth....contrary to what most people seem to have made up from that story.

2: Reach (game) is a reconstruction of the events during the fall of Reach based upon security footage, footage from satelites, helmet recordings etc etc. It's an attempt to make clear what has happened to Noble Team on the planet. Being "the most complete reconstruction anybody has been able to assemble" inevitably means contradictions with established canon, and mostly: with the assumptions the community has made over the years since FoR. It being a reconstruction covered most of its canon "breaches".

3: 343i has tied the game and book with additional backstory so that they do in fact both work: RED FLAG. Which basically means the length of the battle and the initial size in the game are explained for, while also leading up to the battle that takes place at the end of FoR. Sure: there are still inconsistenties but we can attribute them to the reconstructional character of the game, and the point of view of the PoA which both look at the war differently.

So what did happen? Something that lies in the middle of what Reach tries to reconstruct about 30 years later, and the little information FoR gives, followed by about 3 weeks of guerilla fighting on a similar scale as Noble Team was doing before hell broke loose, ending with Chief rescuing Halsey and a handfull of S2's.

Oh, and if you really want to know what happens on Reach, you should also include First Strike. Most people seem to forget that one covers more details about the fall of Reach than FoR did...

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

I'll quote Yahtzee on this one, "It's a place where -blam!- got -blam!- up."
