I'm not sure if it's ever stated outright, but I think it had a lot to do with accessibility to Forerunner artifacts.

I think it's made apparent by the Sangheili-San 'Shyuum War that both races had easier access to artifacts, as in they were kind of just sitting out in plain view.

If I recall correctly, the only Forerunner structure of any significance on Earth was the Ark portal, which by the looks of it in Halo 3, was buried several hundred meters deep.

And apparently they didn't have much wars to wager intra-species like humans did...

I wouldn't go that far.

The San 'Shyuum population in the Covenant are stated (I think in Contact Harvest) to be descended from splinter faction of their species that wanted to explore/exploit Forerunner technology. I'm pretty sure they fought a war over it, and it's ironic given that it was the exact same reason for their war against the Sangheili. They essentially staged a coup, hijacked the Forerunner Dreadnaught, and fled their home planet.

I remember reading something about the possibility of the Covenant San 'Shyuum being the last of their species, after the star in their home system was predicted to go supernova not long after their departure (their home planet might have been destroyed, literally making High Charity their home world.)

As for the Sangheili, while I don't recall any mention of past wars, I find it hard to believe that such an honor-bound society that glorifies warrior class doesn't have a bloody history. Hell, if it weren't for their honor, (the extent of which varies on an individual basis, *cough* Zuka 'Zamamee was a coward *cough*) the Sangheili wouldn't be much better than their Jiralhanae counterparts.

If you ask me, I'd say the Sangheili hate the Jiralhanae so much because they see the savage version of themselves in them.

I am a monument to all your sins

they evolved sentience before humanity, and were helped along by forerunner artifacts
