Subject: Chief has to die

This subject periodically comes up every now and then, but looking at what Halo is becoming, I'm starting to strongly shift towards Chief dying by the end of the Reclaimer Trilogy. Now before you bemoan me about how cliche it would be, just stop. The hero lives through his or her quest far more often than they do dying after it. And death is really the only option he has left.

He has nothing to go, at all. He has been trained for war and nothing else, I doubt he would re-integrate into society well. Not to mention the possibility that Chief may not be all there mentally after his encounters with the Flood. I mean, who knows what he will undergo when facing the Timeless One.

I just don't see the point of keeping Chief around post-Reclaimer Trilogy. All it does is have him in reserve in case Microsoft and 343 decide to make a new Halo game with some brand new threat that mysteriously comes out of the woodwork. I'd rather not see that day.

Mostly because I'm worried about how Halo is going to progress now that I've seen what Glasslands has in store. I'm also trying to see if anyone's perceptions have changed about this discussion. So, got anything to add?

I agree except for the part about Chief having a mental breakdown.

As I recall, you imply that because he's a Spartan, he isn't allowed to have any PTSD or the effects that come with it?

Yes. Let the warrior have the rest he dearly deserves.

Memory is hazy, but I recall one of the first Spartan IIIs had a condition after her first major deployment. I can't for the life of me remember, but I'm sure you folks can, Ghosts of Onyx intro.

Yeah, Lucy lost her ability to speak. Well, she chose not to speak, but it was due to PTSD.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Spartans are bred soldiers, the best possible human that could be created. Now, I'm not saying seeing about 300 of your fellow Spartans being turned to glass and charred bone in an instant is petty to what Chief has gone through, but if that was enough to cause PTSD, then likely, the horror that is The Flood, coupled with the Gravemind toying with John about Cortana, has to have some effect on him.

Spartans are the best, but even the best can break down.

I heard somewhere that when dealing with PTSD, it's the people not having periodic episodes that are who you need to worry about.

They've broken in a different way. It doesn't show as much on the surface, but when something sets it off, yes, things become dangerous.

And with that in mind, I sure as hell don't want to be near Chief if he ever cracks.

What if Chief ends up experiencing something like what Isaac Clark went through in Dead Space 2?

I wouldn't be suprised if we had a few "jump" moments involving Chiefs memories of the Flood or something along those lines in Halo 4 or beyond.

The Flood is just as nightmarish as Necromorphs, but, granted, what was causing Isaac's dementia was something else.

Cortana was dangerously close to the GM, there's his trigger.

And the fact Gravemind sent all those messages to him of Cortana in an unfit state to toy with him.

Possible trigger to dementia or something else may have just been found.

Heh, Isaac's own Dementia was attempting to kill him as time wore on. It even tricked him into believing he was coming out of it.

I don't think Chief would go down so easily to something like that, but at the end of the new trilogy, it would likely be fair that he dies. What do you do after experiences like that? It would be impossible to intergrate back into society.

It would also be a fairly anti-climatic finish for Chief after all he's been through.

And so Chief and his [spoilers] defeated [spoilers] saving the galaxy. Chief retired to an old folks home in New Mombassa, where he occasionally has periodic episodes and drools himself to sleep.

Yeah.

  • 11.13.2011 1:50 AM PDT

I can see three possible outcomes:

1. The Chief dies protecting his fellow Spartans and the rest of humanity, maybe even sacrificing himself so the Sangheili can live. (End result, a proper peace with them)

2. The Chief survives, and becomes the next Mendez, training a new line of Spartans.

3. The Chief dies in the same manner as in No.1, but when the next batch of Spartans turn up a six year old boy is with them -- a clone of John, ready to be trained again.

I think it's fair to say that the encounters with the Flood would have an effect on anyone. Look at what he says to Thel when the Flood land on Earth. He clearly doesn't like them.

If they did that I'll leave Halo forever.

  • 11.13.2011 2:30 AM PDT

It would be the final scene in Halo anyway. No one would come back, because there would be no Halo to come back to. But it would leave a legacy.

NO ! CHEIF WILL NOT DIE !
The flood has a high chance of hiding on other worlds, installations,GALAXIES ! meaning to say flood is invincible and when you defeat flood in one part ...there would be another place with flood growing....it would be logical for the flood to do that for survival (Grey this is not for you and please ignore my post because i dont want to argue with you again).

Cheif is a great example of bravery...power...herois.
