I hope he's an online community guy, and not a marketing guy...I believe urk will be handling more of the PR/Marketing stuff and he'll dump..I mean give the Community duties to the new guy.I'd place us over marketing any day.
Marketing brings in the megabucks. But I think that the publisher carries the burden of marketing to ensure that the megabucks are as mega as possible.
Keeping the hardcore fan base engaged, interested, occupied and faithful? A community dude/chick has become pretty standard practice throughout the industry. A long time and a lot of changes since it was Matt who was charged with "protecting the Bungie way".
While marketing does in fact bring in the megabucks. A lot of being a community manager comes down to getting community feedback to shape a game, and marketing it accordingly or at least that's how I would do it.
For Example: '' This is what went wrong with our previous games, you won't see it again. This is what turned out better than what we expected, and now we're enhancing and expanding this component of our game.
Both are equally important, the same could be said about quantitative feedback vs qualitative feedback, both need taken into account. Ultimately it's the community that's buying your game.

Community people are quite influential, for instance, KP was the father of my gamertag...
No matter how many times you say that, he is still not paying you any child support.
